Game 1

Friday, August 1 - 7:05 ET

http://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_123801.jpg-------http://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_407113.jpg

BOS: RHP Tim Wakefield (6-8, 3.94) (http://www.baseball-reference.com/w/wakefti01.shtml) vs OAK: RHP Justin Duchsherer (10-7, 2.37) (http://www.baseball-reference.com/d/duchsju01.shtml)

Red Sox: Wakefield suffered through his shortest outing since May 23 on Sunday, surrendering six runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings against the Yankees. That May 23 game was against Oakland, which will be Wakefield's next challenge when he takes the mound on Friday. Wakefield allowed eight runs and eight hits in five innings during that outing against the A's, and he'll look to rebound from both that start in Oakland as well as his last outing against New York. Prior to the Yankees game, Wakefield had a 2.96 ERA in four July starts.

http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/images/players/action/ph_123801.jpg

Athletics: Duchscherer endured his worst performance of the season in his last start against Texas, giving up a career-high eight runs on nine hits while pitching into the seventh inning after entering the game not having allowed more than three earned runs all season. He said he felt fine and explained that the powerful Rangers lineup "flat out beat me." Duchscherer will look to get back on track against a team against which he earned a win earlier in the season. He didn't allow a run and scattered just one hit through eight innings in that start versus Boston.

Game 2

Saturday, August 2 - 7:05 ET

http://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_452657.jpg-------http://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_445968.jpg

BOS: LHP Jon Lester (9-3, 3.17) (http://www.baseball-reference.com/l/lestejo01.shtml) vs OAK: LHP Dana Eveland (7-7, 3.88) (http://www.baseball-reference.com/e/evelada01.shtml)

Red Sox: When Lester last took the mound on Sunday against the Yankees, New York had taken the first two games of the series and were in position to draw even with the Sox in the standings. But just as he's done all season, Lester delivered a brilliant outing that propelled Boston to a 9-2 win. He went seven strong innings and allowed just two runs -- both coming in a troublesome fifth inning. He recorded a no-decision on April 23 against the Angels, allowing four runs and two homers in a 6-4 Boston loss.

http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/images/players/action/ph_452657.jpg

Athletics: After posting four innings of one-run ball in his last start against Texas, Eveland ran into trouble in the fifth frame and let frustration get the best of him en route to allowing five runs. The A's offense, though, had already given him six runs, so Eveland walked away with a no-decision. This will mark his first career start against Boston.

http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/images/players/action/ph_445968.jpg

Game 3

Sunday, August 3 - 1:35 ET

http://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_493137.jpg-------http://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_460284.jpg

BOS: RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka (11-2, 3.04) (http://www.baseball-reference.com/m/matsuda01.shtml) vs LHP Dallas Braden (2-1, 4.39) (http://www.baseball-reference.com/b/bradeda01.shtml)

Red Sox:Matsuzaka is coming off one of his roughest starts of the season, giving up six runs in five innings pitched against the Angels. But his July ERA was lights-out prior to the outing -- a mere 1.05 in four starts during the month. Matsuzaka walked only two batters against Los Angeles, which is always his one area of concern when he takes the ball. He's walked 62 batters this year, placing him two behind Daniel Cabrera for most in the American League as of his last start. This will be Matsuzaka's third start against the A's this season, but his first since April 1. He's 1-0 against Oakland, with Boston winning both of his starts in one-run affairs.

http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/images/players/action/ph_493137.jpg

Athletics: In just his second start since being placed back in the rotation, Braden fared well against the Royals, but two mistakes were enough for a loss. He pitched 6 2/3 innings, surrendering six hits -- two of them two-run dingers -- en route to allowing four runs in a 4-1 loss. This will mark Braden's first career start -- and appearance -- against Boston.

Im hoping for a 3 game sweep. We need it. 2 out of 3 will make me happy as well. im sick of the losing. ive had to watch the angels and yankees own us over the last weeks. I hpe this offense just starts raking after the trade and we go on a complete tear of the AL

we need to win a series badly. Hopefully not having to worry about the distraction anymore can just keep them focused on the game and winning again

This series is enormous for us.

A sweep would put us on the right track. Winning 2/3 would still really, really feel nice.

I just want Bay to produce a couple of hits. I'm excited for him.

What do you guys think the batting order will look like? Do you think Francona will plug Bay into Manny's #4 slot or do you think he'll shake it up a little? I think putting three guys who will work the count in front of Ortiz could benefit us as it did the Angels with Vlad before they picked up Teixiera.

I haven't really been excited at all this season. I think a shakeup was good to gain back interest for a lot of fans. I just hope Bay makes the monster his *****, and isn't intimidated by the stage that he's playing on.

So is definite that Jason Bay will make his Red Sox debut tonight?

If so i'm very excited to see what he can do. It will be awesome if he can hit a homerun his first game here. I remember back in '04 Orlando Cabrera hit a homerun is his second at bat as a Red Sox. That was pretty exciting.

Billy Bean will ask for Masterson and Bucholz or Bowden or something way overprice to deal him to the Redsoxs. Papelbon has 5 blown saves this year but still has had over 30 3 straight years. I take him over Fualke and Urbino and anyone before him recently. He just shouldn't be talking trash as he not done it for 10 years. When he is lights out for 10 straight years then he can call himself the best. I think sometimes he shouldn't always open his mouth.

The new team is all about one thing: Hustle.

Lowrie hustles down first, Bay hustles his way to third. Ramirez would have gotten to 2nd on Bay's hit, and even if everything after that happened, it'd be bases loaded with 2 outs rather than the game winner.

That's right, since everyone is going to keep saying how much worse off we are without Ramirez, I'll make a comment like this.

Good job Sox. The new era has officially begun.

Lets not get carried away now. Im as happy as any Boston fan after that game but it still is only ONE GAME. the 2 strikeouts were sad to see but maybe it was just nerves, and him feeling uncomfortable. He is a very very good hitter and i been saying it all along. Our lineup wont be a problemn with manny gone. We will not be a worse team hitting. we just need our bullpen to keep leads an we will be just fine. our bullpen is what we need to come thru in order to make a run at another W.S

Excellent first game.. hopefully a few more games like that and we can shut up the naysayers. He showed good hustle and seemed to get along with the team. Goes a long way when the team knows who the FO is trying to acquire (Bay) and collectively tell the Theo and Henry they want Manny traded.. the standing ovation during his first AB was a nice welcome also.

I've seen enough already to realize his teammates can count on him. He made a nice catch too.
Longterm he might produce as well as Manny does wherever he is. Manny is sliding this kid could very well be improving.

IF manny ran out a grounder how'd he do it with bad knees?
O wonder the same thing....

On a sidenote, who saw Manny out in LF? ESPN showed it - Didn't even hustle, and allowed the batter to get to third on a triple. Good job, Manny!

I'm so happy we have a hustle LFer.

the team is united again and the AL is screwed. we just need to start hitting more with ppl on base.

Welcome to Boston Jason Bay!

Congrats to Lowrie for comming through in the clutch with the game winner!
on a side note, we all know lugo would have screwed that up.

Before we get too excited about this win and declare ourselves ready to go on a huge run, let's not forget that our setup man who hasn't been the same all year blew yet another lead and our offense, which has been very inconsistent lately, scored 2 runs in 12 innings.

I think this team has a ton of talent and will turn it around eventually, but I can't say I saw the same thing everyone else did. It looked like a similar team as we've seen recently to me; we just played a far worse hitting team than the Angels (lately anyways; they've had an average offensive year...but been on fire lately) and Yankees.

He's probably scared shitless. He actually has to deal with a large LF. That's going to suck, especially considering he doesn't have as good of a defensive Center Fielder next to him like Crisp/Ellsbury.

Sucks. :)

I again need to ask: Where are the Yankee fans that said we had no shot without Ramirez?

Fact is, anyone that didn't think we'd play better without Ramirez for the next two month was being crazy. A new, young, hustle type player was just what the doctor ordered.

Yes, we absolutely were. We pretty had to fight off all those "HAHAHAH thank god Manny is gone!!!" and "Well, guess the Yankees make the Playoffs guaranteed this year" and stuff.

And now, they've disappeared. I'm not saying that two games tells me we've got the World Series in our hands, but anyone that has watched these two games can see they're playing with a new, aggressive and hustle type of attitude. Jason Bay was EXACTLY what we needed.

For all I care, Manny can go get all his money on the open market after the season. We've got a guy that will give us 100%, 100% of the time. You could NEVER say that about Manny.

Yankee fans were just searching for answers for why they won't win the division and probably won't even make the playoffs. It's easy to jump to conclusions when you trade a player the caliber of Manny Ramirez. Looks like it is going to work out for us in the end. By the way didn't we make a "questionable" trade at the 04 deadline as well? How'd that one turn out. Ohhhh yea... World Series champs. That's right

This team looks poised to go on a hot, hot, hot streak. It wouldn't have happened had we not traded the thorn in our side.
