Nationals Release Lo Duca, Lopez
By Cork Gaines [July 31 at 10:25pm CST]

The Washington Post is reporting that the Nationals released both Paul Lo Duca and Felipe Lopez following tonight's game. The move was made to free-up space on the roster for Elijah Dukes and Emilio Bonifacio.

Lo Duca was hitting .230/.301/.281 in 139 at bats this season and made $5MM on a one-year deal. Lopez was hitting .231/.303/.309 in 324 at bats and was in his final arbitration-eligible season, making $4.9MM.
I'm not saying he's going to be as good as he was in the past (Go look up the numbers, he has been a solid offensive SS in the past), but would anyone here be interested in him? We could always let Cora go when Lugo returns, and have Lugo and Lopez split time at SS.

Personally, I've been a fan of him for a while. I wish the Red Sox would do it, since I know they're not got to use Lowrie everyday this year.

Lopez had one good offensive year when he went to the all star game in 2005, other than that he has been a pretty garbage hitter for his entire career. With that said I still wouldn't mind him over Julio Lugo, although I think Lowrie should stay at short.

I've watched Felipe in DC for a couple years. His mind wanders a lot, but I think he'd concentrate much harder in a full stadium with something on the line. He's a switch hitter but I believe he hits better from the right side.

I definitely think that he could make an impact. I wouldn't mind seeing him in a Sox uniform.

Well, he has to have better range than Cora, so why not.

I say its worth taking a chance I like Lowerie but don't have faith in him for the long term & also i think whatever Lopez would do for us would be better than Lugo which isn't saying much....:D

I don't know why we'd dump a player that we know what we'll get from him every single time out (Cora) for Lopez. It can't speak highly of him if the Nats are DFAing him, and while you can make the argument that they're simply trying to dump veterans, it's tough to imagine he's of much value if they couldn't even get out of paying his contract in a salary dump or something.

Kevin Cash is no Estrada though. Not even close. And I would rather have LoDuca.

Trot Nixon was a starter

cora gives the team a boost everytime he plays, he plays it the right way and u know he will be a good backup and play solid defense

are u going to risk that on losing that to get lopez?

He signed a minor league deal with the D'Backs then got traded to the Mets for PTBNL in June. He got some regular time when Alou and Church both hit the DL... until he hit the DL at the end of July.

Lopez is one of the worst defensive players in MLB. Obviously, Lugo is not a GG defensive SS. But the only thing Lopez is really good for anymore is pinch running. His OBP is terrible too.
