View Full Version : Carlos Quentin for AL MVP

rfathi1

Quentin just parked one for the Sox against the Twins. The Sox needed to come out of the gates in this one and this guy did it like he has all season. I can't think of another player that deserves the league MVP anymore than this guy. He is the most clutch hitter in baseball right now and the Sox would be garbage without him in the lineup. You can make a case for Francisco Rodriguez, but the MVP chants need to start in Chicago every time he comes up to bat.

K - Rod has no chance to win the MVP, no matter how many games he saves. Pitchers have there own award, the Cy Young. And I think your right about CQ being the MVP. The only other guy (that I can think of) that I could make a case for, is Josh Hamilton, but I doubt he'll win it, just because the Rangers aren't going to make the playoffs.

No, do not say Josh Hamilton, he hasn't even been the 2nd best player on his team.

He's gotta be right at the heart of the discussion

I would vote for Quentin to be sure. I am a bit biased though.

Mmmm yeah if we make the playoffs I dont know who else you could really even argue for? Maybe Jermaine?

You know that ARod will be in the discussion, especially if the Yankees can catch the Saux and Rays.

If we make the playoffs The Q definitely has the best shot at MVP.

yeah i think when the sox make playoffs and rangers dont
quentin should be front runner
also dont forget about dye if he keeps prducin he also has the average

Oh boy in the offseason I wanted him to be our 4th OF :hide:.

ANd those who wanted him to start wanted him 8th or 9th.

And there was a resounding cheer of "Swish cannot bat lower than 4th, if Ozzie bats him 6th I'll flip out!"

I'm going to the game next Thursday vs the Tigers. I'm going to start the MVP chants. If no one chimes in, I don't care. I'll go solo.

Yes Carlos Quentin is by far the most deserving player in the AL.

Carlos Quentin is very deserving of a MVP and I would vote for him.

Cullksinikers

I'm not saying this because I'm a Cubs fan, but Josh Hamilton is more deserving. Carlos Quentin is a fantastic player. but Hamilton has done more this season.

Illini Tim

Carlos will not get it because he does not play on the East Coast and he his not a former drug addict.

Yes but he is on a playoff contender which hamilton is not.

Right now if the season ended I think the standings would look something like this:

1.Carlos Quentin
2A.Josh Hamilton
2B.Jermaine Dye

Here are the Stats for Hamilton and Quentin you decide....

Hamilton
.305 Avg | 27 Hr's | 108 Rbi's | 74 R | 7 SB's | .369 OBP | .558 SLG | .926 OPS

Quentin
.285 Avg | 29 Hr's | 86 Rbi's | 79 R | 5 SB's | .379 OBP | .557 SLG | .936 OPS

These stats are very very similar and like JD said if Quentin had Kinsler and Young in front of him Quentin's stats would probably be better. I would give the edge to Quentin simply because the Sox have a better record since the stats are so similar.

GrinderBall41

Yeah if you look at the numbers, it has to be CQ.

Or if you ignore teams' records, A-Rod or Hamilton.

But if the Sox make it to the playoffs and the Yanks and Rangers dont I would say CQ is a shoe-in.

Capital G

hamilton has really slowed down since the all star game. that and tx is not a play-off contender.

plus everytime i hear someone on tv speak of carlos they mention how the sox would not be where they are if it was not for him.

i think he has really good shot at mvp especially if his #s post all star continue to stay steady and hamilton's continue to slow down.

Another important stat that points to CQ deserving the MVP award.

He leads the AL in close-and-late OPS (1.160).

Also the fact that Hamilton's only glaringly better stat is RBI, which is skewed by the fact that has has had 134 PA's w/ RISP (AL leader) as opposed to CQ's 100.

Also worth mentioning is the fact that Hamilton has 224 PA w/ runners on (AL leader) as opposed to CQ's 168.

I cannot believe there are no MVP chants for the CQ yet. What is going on up there? I am amazed at his season. A stretch to make the team out of ST and now an MVP candidate. We are going to have to win the division for him to have any chance.

I just looked at Hamilton's and Quentin's #s and they look like this

Quentin-.286/.383/.565 32 HR 90 RBI 416 AB
Hamilton-.300/.366/.546 27 HR 108 RBI 456 AB

If Quentin had Kinsler and Young in front of him he would have a lot more RBI.

sager729

I just looked and Hamilton hit his 28th HR and had 3 more RBI so he now has 111 RBI on the year.

Jason Stark said the MVP is the CQ's to lose. He made the argument that the CQ has outhit hamilton by over 50 points since the all star break-during the big games. Think about it that way I agree with him. GO THE CQ

How can you give an MVP to a player who's team is 12 game out of first place in their own division. Its Most Valuable Player, not best offense numbers.

GrinderBall41
08-13-2008, 07:40 AM
Yeah to me, saying that winning doesnt matter for an MVP is like saying that Danks should be in the Cy Young convo because he has good ERA and WHIP but wins dont matter.

Justin Duchscherer should win the CY. Little higher ERA but his WHIP is way lower and that is better overall for judging pitchers.

Winning shouldn't matter in the MVP/CY voting. It does though.

Someone else is awake at this hour :)

Ive taken a couple programming classes, in Matlab and C... I liked C, hated Matlab.

Wow we're getting very much off topic.

Who do you think are the top 5 contenders against CQ for MVP?

I would say Hamilton (for media and RBI reasons only), A-Rod (because, well, hes A-Rod), JD Drew (has been the best hitter on BOS), Morneau (if MIN win the Central), and possibly Evan Longoria

If Quentin keeps average or above and sox make the play offs (which we will) Quentin will be the MVP, hands down.

Hamilton is on HGH .. no ex drug addict clean for a year will have that strength with out an addition substance.

you have no way of knowing wether or not he is on HGH....and to say so just because he came out of know where and used to use drugs is very wrong. Quentin came out of now where, so can we assume he is on HGH as well??

Little that you know, I am a medical professional. Therefore, due to multiple studies of heroin addicts they need lots of time for full recovery. It is funny how all of basbeball is just dying to have this feel good story. However, they all tend to forget that Bobby Jenks was discarded by the Angels due to his Alcohol abuse. Yet, since he has been a White Sox he has been great, another feel good story.

As for Quentin he has always have that strenght and size.

Maybe he is not on HGH but he has some substance in his body to keep his strength that he has loss during his addiction. Look at the players profiles from college again Carlos always well built, Josh not so much. Looks like Brian Anderson size.

Quentin = MVP
