so, according to that, we're supposed to win the division?

sboyajian

Yes.. based on our existing home record and the amount of home games we have after the break.

Also considering the expected cool down that TB should experience as the season progresses.

Seems accurate.

I like it... :D

so, according to that, we're supposed to win the division?

Right. According to that there's a 48.7% chance they win the division, 21.2% chance they win the WC, adding up to a 69.9% chance of making the playoffs.

Check out the site, it's pretty interesting. They make their predictions by simulating the rest of the season thousands of times every day and adjusting accordingly. Obviously things like the trade of Teixeira will effect that.

Another loss last night (ugly, too) with a tight race could change things quickly, too.

A ten game winning streak by us might help also. :D

being three games back doesn't scare me right now...with manny gone the team has achieved mental nirvana.

I'm not worried until we are 7-8 back in September. This team can go off at any moment, and if the pitching locks down we will win the division easily. Tampa should cool down eventually

This probably sounded good at the beginning of the month but I am becoming more and more convinced that the Rays won't fold and that spells disaster for the Sox. Crawford went to the DL 8/10, Longoria on 8/11, and Percival on 8/15 yet the Rays are still 8-2 in their last 10 games, have nearly evened their road record (what I was pinning my hopes on), and managed to do what the Sox have not done since early April: beat the Angels. In that span the Rays have picked up a game on the Sox in the standings. The 2008 Rays are looking to have a season more and more like the 2007 D'Backs -- talent recognized yet still surprising people all the way to the playoffs.

The Sox meanwhile dropped a pair of embarrassing games to the Blue Jays and look more and more like a team that cannot beat top shelf pitchers. It's not something to hang on Manny's departure -- they've failed all season. If, as I assume, the Rays fail to collapse and the Sox edge the Twins for the WC then it could be a very short post season for Boston. They'll have to travel to face the Angels who've owned the Sox all season (1-8).

They certainly could still catch fire during the last six weeks of the season but nine games with the Blue Jays (six on the road) scare me. The Jays have a voodoo hex on the Sox and their top three arms are the types of guys that have shut down the Sox all year.

This is not setting up well at all.

Here's a question for you... the Rays have a weekend series against the White Sox... and still have a four game series against Minnesota in mid-September. I guess I'm curious who you're rooting for in this upcoming series... do we shoot for Tampa being swept or do we want the Rays to sweep out Chicago so we have a little more breathing room in the Wild Card? I think the worst is the most likely to happen, and neither will sweep, with that giving us the least amount of leverage...

As long as the Rays are ahead of the Sox I'll pull for their opponents. CWS is already in first place so extra wins don't effect the Sox as much as Rays losses. If the Sox manage to find their way to first place then I really don't care much.

the Twins play the Angels this weekend in Anaheim so that is a big series that affects the Red Sox

The Red Sox play the Rays and Blue Jays a lot in the rest of the season. Hopefully we can gain some games when we play the Rays, and get our selves together vs. those damn Blue Jays!

will win the al east

Glad for the confidence but I'd like to know why you think so. The Rays almost swept the Angels despite Longoria, Crawford, and Percival on the DL. When they seemed most vulnerable the Rays actually gained in the standings. They are looking tougher to overcome, especially with their road record improving during the second half.

I don't think it's impossible to win the East but the Sox are going to have to pick up 1 game in the loss column each week in order to do it. So far they've headed in the wrong direction.

^^ Think Wild Card.....

That might be a tough nut to crack now too. Minnesota and the WS aren't going away either. We keep get weakened by these injuries. _Drew-Lowell-Beckett-Wake-Ortiz-Lugo?- Manny- oh wait Manny wasn't really hurt.

But WC it is.......

The perfect, realistic scenario as of now would be to get the Wild Card, and play the AL Central winner. I would not want to play the Angels in the ALDS, and we can't play a division rival in the ALDS.

I believe that the team with the best record hosts the WC. At the moment my money is still on LAA which is very bad news for the Sox.

How sweet would it be if the Yankees fall back 2 or 3 more games before they play the Rays and the Yankee fans will have to watch those games knowing that a win helps the Red Sox. And that Sox fans will be rooting for them!!! Oh my god that will be so sweet!

Of course, i hope the opposite doesn't happen....I wont say it here...but here is a hint. (rhymes with Schmoston Bass hugger)

Well.. only 1.5 games back at this point.. so winning the east is still possible.
