The New York Knickerbockers President of Basketball Operations Donnie Walsh announced today that a 2010 second-round draft choice, guard Taurean Green and guard/forward Bobby Jones have been acquired from Denver for forward Renaldo Balkman and cash considerations.

The draft pick will be the more favorable selection between the Nuggets and Clippers, resulting from a previous trade.

Balkman, 6-8, 208-pounds, averaged 3.4 points and 3.3 rebounds in 65 games for New York last season. Originally drafted by the Knicks after his junior season at the University of South Carolina in the first round (20th overall) of the 2006 NBA Draft, the Staten Island-native finishes his career in blue and orange having played in 133 career games, averaging 4.2 points, 3.8 rebounds and 15.2 minutes over two seasons.

Good deal for the Nuggets, but since Balkman can play D..we all know he probably wont get any minutes:)

I liked Balkman because he brought energy to the team the past couple of years but right now I am just sitting back and watching Walsh work. It seems like he has some master plan and little moves like this are apart of it. Bobby Jones doesn't seem like the right player for D'Antoni's offense and I can't see Green getting any time because he is still very young.

Wow.. I don't get this move for the knicks at all! What are they thinking? They got another PG? they have 4 pg on their roster right now.. Balkman a sparkplug.. Who could play some defense.. He would have fit in nice with D'antonie's system. Wow the Knicks just make me scratch my head Lol..Unless there is somthing I don't know.. this trade seems liek a steal for denver.. Balkman has real good potential. And is a Athleate.

Funny how the Knicks deceided to dump one of the few players they have that has neither a bad contract or a bad additude.

neither one of the 2 guys the knicks traded for are going to make the roster. Neither one of them have guaranteed contracts and the knicks needed a roster space available to sign their rookies. All in all, it saves the knicks 2.7 million dollars next year due to the luxury tax as well it makes it easier to sign free agents in 2 years since they will no longer have to make a qualifying offer to Balkman to retain him. So it was a good move. Trust me..... And they got a pick in the top 35 or so 4 next off season.

This was not a move just 2 make a move. Also, they need 2 free up minutes for that draft pick euro guy. It was a good trade for bothe teams although it will bear no outcome on who wins the nba championship in the next 5 years.

Lakers in '09

HAHAHAH this was too good.
Im glad Journey man Balkman is gone. It was like 4 on 5 with that guy on the floor. Good money move and im looking forward to more trash being thrown away. Isiah sure loved collecting other teams garbage.

nuggets won out on this trade, all we get is cap space next year and a 2nd rounder in 2010

both teams made out on this trade. the nuggets needed him since camby is gone and the knicks needed to lose that contract.

Don't forget. Balkman can't shoot. An offense that is based on spreading the floor, like D'Antoni's, needs shooters. If Balkman had at least an average shot, then his defense would be a great asset. But what he gives you on defense, he loses on offense. Good trade for the Knicks, even if it is just cap room.

I like it for the Nuggs. Balkman will give em a nice energy player off the bench.

This move stinks completely, how much cap does it save us? 50 cents?

My lord, come on is not so difficult, just trade Marbury for some Talent, he has a massive expiring contract.

Then try to make a package of young players to throw in Randolph somehwere else.

I wonder if the Bulls would accept Randolph +Gallinari +Nate for Gordon and Deng.

good trade for the nuggets, With the departure of Camby and Najara, Balkman's defense will be appreciated.

I think it's a great deal for Denver..The Knicks wont keep Green or Jones. The thing with this deal is its a small cog in a bigger picture that we havnt seen the end of yet.

I expect both teams to make more moves..maybe some big ones.

It was a good deal for both teams. Balkman wouldnt do anything behind Chandler and Gallanari and Balkman doesnt shoot well. You guys need defense. You got him for his hustle.

Yeah. Thats the feeling around the team. He's a young more athletic Najera basically for us..he'll get good minutes here

So they gave Balkman away for nothing?

Please explain why the Knicks did this. I remember Balkman used to have hype and value.

Nugget153
07-29-2008, 01:15 AM
They did it because he wouldn't get floor time with the roster they have now

Balkman's job, I think, is to try and replace Camby's energy and defense.

The Knicks wouldn't "have to" make a qualifying offer. They wouldn't have to do anything. They save 1.3 off the cap this year but they are already way over. After that Balkmen was a team option.

That thinking is the reason NY continues to suck. No they don't trade Marbury...let the fool expire. If the plan is 2010, stick to it....don't take on longer contracts of average players to get stuck in the cycle of mediocrity.

You don't pay over 3 mil(lux tax) to the 12 th man...so they got a 2nd rounder for him. don't act Like Renaldo Balkman had value. Dude's a fringe NBA player.

Randolph is not a throw in to anybody in the league, any deal has to be built around him.

Balkman's job, I think, is to try and replace Camby's energy and defense.

Yeah, he and Chris Andersen are the replacements for Najera and Camby.

Balkman isn't the player that Eddie is (although in time he could be - he's much more athletic, for one thing). And of course the Birdman ain't no Camby. But considering that the Nuggets are paying them just 1/5 of the combined salary of Najera and Camby, and that they got a $10 million trade exception in the process... not so shabby for Denver all in all.
