Steelers signed rookie RB Rashard Mendenhall, the No. 23 overall pick, to a five-year, $12.555 million contract. The deal includes $7.125 million guaranteed, according to NFL Network's Adam Schefter.

Mendenhall was knocked for being a one-year wonder at Illinois, but we like it. He's fresh, and it wasn't like he did it in C-USA. Mendenhall had a bad hamstring in OTAs, but should be 100% now. He heads to camp as the presumptive favorite for goal-line carries with a chance to be the third-down back. Count on Pittsburgh using him in a true timeshare with Willie Parker this season.

He will be a BEAST. So pumped up to see him and Willie as our RB's.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin outlined RB Rashard Mendenhall's role as a "supplemental runner."

"The growth of his role will be determined on his ability to execute from an assignment standpoint, how he deals with being a professional athlete." As an advanced pass-blocker and good receiver, Mendenhall shouldn't have an issue with missing assignments. Mendenhall could be used similarly to Maurice Jones-Drew in Jacksonville, as a short-yardage back with a prominent role in the passing game.

He's good in the passing game. See the Rose Bowl, he's got good hands and is very capable of making big plays in the passing game.
