I don't know if I read this right...but is this Beckett's last season under contract? If so...why is there no talk about this? Isn't it kind of a big deal our ace could walk after this season? Why aren't we offering him a contract yet? I know he loves Boston and all and he will most likely stay...but what if Yanks make a ridic offer?

Right, $10M for 2009 and $12M for 2010.

...some people wanted him locked in longer term last year. After a brilliant season where are they now? Beckett for me has been a disappointment , albeit not a major one.

He just seems to have lost some fire. Maybe a rowdy crowd tonight and Ortiz's return will do it for him! Right now he isn't under paid last year he was looking way under paid.

Funny how that works..

His curve was horrible for the first part of the year... Not sure how it got all screwed up...

Last start he looked the best he has in a while... They just left him in too long...

I think he'll be up for tonights huge game...

I really don't get how Beckett's been a disappointment this season. If he'd had more consistent/better run support, he could legitimately be holding a 16-2, 15-3 record right now. The Sox have wasted at least half a dozen terrific starts by him.

He hasn't had the same dominant stuff as last year...

His ERA is 3.98... Which isn't like the Beckett we grew to love last year...

Through 18 games last year he had 14 quality starts, 3 non-quality, and one I can't really categorize (when the avulsion occurred, he had given up 2ER, had 7K in 4IP against BAL). He finished with 23/30 for 77% QS. This year he's at 61%.

Last year he also started 11-2 and, as bad as W-L is as a measurement, it has a very different feel than 9-6.

One other consideration, the Sox' ability to lose for Beckett despite great outings extended to last year as well. At this point in the season they'd lost 2 games where he went 7+IP/2er or less; this year it's only been three. Honestly, he has "earned" most of his losses.

Thanks for explaining it much better than I...

I noticed Beckett's record isnt what I would expect it to be. But hey look at Matsuzaka. I think Craig Biggio said it best on that Astros 2005 DVD when he said "every year theres one pitcher that gets no runs and one that gets all the runs" (in reference to Clemens) and maybe its just a year Beckett gets some of the runs. Who knows. He's better than a 3.98 ERA. Im sure he'll be hyped for tonight. Red Sox and Yankees..... I live for this stuff.

Let him struggle through the season.... wait til playoffs Im sure he'll step it up. Every year is a different story. Just look at Sabathia since he joined Milwaukee. Every season has a reason.

Later yall! GO SOX!

Beckett has always pitched good against the Yankees. He is a big game pitcher so I expect to see him real great tonight. Now the Sox need to give him some run support
