According to Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com, the Red Sox are "deep in conversations" for White Sox infielder Juan Uribe. Knobler says the return is unclear but the White Sox want to shed Uribe's salary. Uribe has about $1.7MM left on his contract this year.http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/story/10907011/rss

Uribe is a terrible hitter and is an even worse fielder, why would you give up a great bench player like Alex Cora for him?

Will they pay us to take him?

Why downgrade from Lugo to Uribe?

Maybe they think Uribe would make a better backup infielder because he's a better SS? Maybe they plan to let Jed play out the season at SS and need a better defensive specialist to act as defensive replacement for Jed.

Uribe for Lugo :)

Perhaps Theo just wants to put into perspective how bad our shortstop situation really could be? Then when Lugo returns in a few weeks he might actually hear some applause.

I'm sure if Theo could get Kenny Williams to take Lugo he'd do whatever it took.

I figured it out....he wants to send Lowrie back down to Pawtucket...play Uribe...and make Sox fans beg for Lugo back while he is on the bench. When Lugo gets his first hit back at SS....soxs fan will go crazy and he will be a fan favorite again.

Red Sox looking to acquire Uribe in deal with Chicago
July 23, 2008
By Danny Knobler

The Red Sox are deep in conversations with the White Sox on a trade that would send infielder Juan Uribe to Boston, according to sources.

Uribe is batting just .225 in limited playing time this season, but his three home runs are one more than all Red Sox shortstops have hit. Boston shortstops are 28th in the majors in runs scored and 23rd in RBI.

It's not clear who the White Sox would get in return for Uribe, but one possibility is Alex Cora, the utility infielder who has fallen out of favor in Boston. Cora's brother, Joey, is the White Sox's bench coach.

Sorry if this was posted elsewhere. Looks like the Red Sox FO are tired of the Lugo experiment at short.

You beat me to the post. It said they don't much for them so why not take a chance an pick him up. He can't be much worse than Lugo. I'd take him

Why downgrade from Lugo to Uribe?

Because Uribe is on a one year deal, half the value of Lugo's and he is done this year. The White Sox need a SS going forward, or at least insurance against O-Cab signing elsewhere, while the Sox could look forward to Lowrie for the rest of the season and beyond.

So is the consensus here that Uribe is an upgrade to Lugo? Not sure I'm ready to jump on that bandwagon.

Don't bother their shoes have holes in them. I rarily believe rumors Cora also said he has heard zilch about it. He mentioned he would have if it had any truth.

Theo was in Seattle. Maybe they will give up some relief pitching. Putz would make a nice addition. lol

Why don't you guys just send us a package for Cabrera? It looks like the White Sox want to dump Uribe's contract to add someone like Roberts, move Alexei to SS, and trade Cabrera to the Dodgers for pitching, thats what the article says. But if you guys really want a SS, get Cabrera back...

ThreeIfBaerga

The article says that Cora has fallen out of favor in Boston, but that's just one thing I have a hard time believing. They've talked the entire time he's been here about what a positive influence he is in the clubhouse and how much Tito loves him.

They've also mentioned wanting to offer him a managerial type job when he's done playing.

If we traded Lugo, they would just cancel each other out, but - Lugo's contract.

I think you missed the headline of the trade...."White Sox looking to dump Uribe's contract to Red Sox."

That means they aren't going to take on a heavier contract than Uribe's haha. That defeats the purpose of trading Uribe in the first place.

I don't think anyone is saying Uribe's a better player than Lugo, but there's some voice to making a swap for the two... Lugo's contract is much worse than Uribe's, and if the Sox really like Lowrie as their shortstop for the next few years, then it'd be a logical swap for the Sox (though I can't imagine why the White Sox pull the trigger).

some rumors actually have Cora, not Lugo, going to Chicago in the trade because of his brother being there...

Discussions between the Red and White Sox (Soxes? Soxii?) regarding Cabrera and Juan Uribe didn't get much of anywhere. - Will Carroll

now if we could get OC back I'll throw in my mother, my right lung and left kidney.

While the Red Sox examined whether to pursue White Sox shortstop Juan Uribe, major league sources indicate the team backed away from a possible deal to acquire him.

Doesn't look like it's going to happen.

And really, it's not a big deal.

Might as well just let Lowrie play.

Lowrie is better option. let him grow into our shortstop that we've needed. he keeps contributing you cant take him out of the lineup you got to do something with lugo

I posted the latest that the Globe (http://www.prosportsdaily.com/forums/showpost.php?p=5996014&postcount=310) had: the deal was killed because the Sox are happy with Lowrie's work and satisfied that Cora can be an adequate backup until Lugo returns.

I whole-heartedly agree with The Intimidator. If there is a time to NOT make a trade, it is now. If there is anything they SHOULD do, is perhaps seek an arm. Otherwise, leave the team alone. The bats will come alive....trust me.

Like I said those shoes have holes in them!

Doesn't pass the sniff test the RS were up to something else another player somehow , someway. Uribe was mentioned as a fill in for something else that evidently died.

Theo was in Seattle does anyone think he would run up a cell phone bill to get Uribe?

This from a guy who keeps pointing out that Theo doesn't do much more than put the right people in the right place and give the final green light?

True! Thats a smart guy.;)

I just don't believe he should bask in the limelight when other guys have as much to do with things as him.
He mentions it all the time.
Ben Cherington runs the farm system then reports to Theo who reports to Lucchino then they decide. :D

But he does take the crap on the downside.

Ask anyone thats worked in a management position the pions are the backbone, piss 'em off and watch. lol

Theo gets all the credit......just doesn't seem fair? You work your heiney off then your boss gets a raise? pisser huh..

Seriously he does put people in the right position and seems good at it. That's all I got!

^^^ I totally agree, and it's what smart folks do the higher they progress in the food chain. He's a great GM not because he makes all the decisions but because he's progressively improving the team around him.

I was mostly giving you a hard time for suggesting Theo was actually allowed to make phone calls. :p

i would rather have Cora. ive liked him ever since tht hit against the yanks in april last year. when coco came in from third, and rivera blew the save.

and if this did happen, i think uribe would start over lugo, because at leat uribe can throw it too 1st base without having the ball end up in the dugout.

i just hope they dont trade cora

But, it's probably not going to happen now, so whatever.

However, had we gotten Uribe, Lugo would have had to play himself out of a role once he returned from the DL for Uribe to take the spot. Players usually don't lose their starting job because of injury (He sucked before, trust me, I know).
