May 31st, Ortiz went down with an injury. On that day, we were exactly 1 game out of first place, with the Yankees 5.5 games out.

Today, July 23rd, two days before Ortiz is likely to return, we're exactly 1 game out of first place, wit hthe Yankees 3.5 games out.

If anyone takes a look at that and doesn't say "Wow", then you're insane. This team has gone through some tough stretches early on, but to STILL just be one game out of 1st without the biggest run producer on this team is something to be very proud about.

He's going to be the biggest pickup that we could possibly make at the Deadline. This is going to be a huge upgrade for the team, and it's likely going to push us over the top.

Definitely gives us the potential to take 1st, and keep it. Now just got to get the bull pen to get it together..

im worried that moving jd drew later in the line up will make his numbers fall when papi comes back

Yeah, that's a slight concern for me as well.

I wonder how he'd handle taking the number 2 spot if they desired removing Ellsbury from the leadoff spot (They likely will/should).

i dont think theyd have jd then papi because it be two left handed hitters in a row they like to go left right left

many could hit 3rd and papi 4th but big papi has said he doesnt like hitting 4th

I understand the whole L/R - I've ALWAYS been in favor of this. Even with that, I still think two lefties in a row wouldn't be a bad thing.

But you're right, the Red Sox probably just wouldn't bother going for that. And thus, we're back to square one: does JD's production slip.

maybe have papi hit 5th? and leave jd at 3rd

See I'm split that much more in the opposite way in this case. Drew's stats versus lefties are absolutely horrid, and Ortiz' numbers versus lefties have been far from eye-popping as well. I'd hate to throw a game into jeopardy because a team is able to bring in their lefty specialist to face (arguably) our two most productive hitters.

Tito has been adamant that when Papi returns to the lineup, he will be inserted back into the 3rd hole, which would move Drew down into the 5th or 6th hole. The return of Papi to the lineup is better than any acquisition they could make.

Survey says:

By Order AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB HBP SO SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS
Batting #3 146 32 41 11 3 12 31 33 2 26 1 0 .281 .413 .644 1.057
Batting #5 6 2 0 0 0 0 0 3 0 1 0 0 .000 .333 .000 .333
Batting #6 99 18 31 5 0 4 16 12 0 26 0 0 .313 .384 .485 .869
Batting #7 45 12 15 3 0 2 10 7 1 11 1 1 .333 .426 .533 .959

He hit just as well at the bottom (6 or 7) as at the top of the order. Given their preference for the L-R-L combination and Drew's weakness @ #5, it makes sense to see him sixth or seventh with Ortiz at #3, and not a lot of worries about a drop off.

Judging by his .255 / 78+ July... I'd be more concerned about finding a new place for him to get hot again and be a little less concerned about whether he'll cool off.

He already has cooled off.

I think when Ortiz comes back the lineup should be...

Pedroia Youk Ortiz Manny Drew Lowell Ellsbury Lowrie Varitek

All i can say to the Yankees on friday is...good luck. It's almost as if we traded for teixeira before the game...but instead his name is david ortiz.

Tito has continued to stick with slumping players over the years, such as sticking with Pedroia last year even though he was hitting .172 in May, and he will continue to do so by batting Jacoby leadoff. Eventually, it will pay dividends, like it did early in the season. We all know that he has the potential, he has just hit the wall a bit.

Simply put, the Red Sox are making the biggest trade in baseball at the deadline in getting Papi. If Drew keeps it up, I don't see how this team doesn't win the division with how well they've done without him.

This is definatly an upgrade, weve played so long without our best hitter, and still we are only 1 game out

also on a side note about the bullpen... Masterson looked preety solid today, thats another positive

Check his last 30 days numbers. He like mentioned cooled off a while back. .224 thats a 21 game stretch.

If anyone takes the time to look his ~one hot streak~ has made his number look way better than he has played before and after the streak. In other words very inconsistent. Hopefully he has another ~ hot streak~.

We need him to be consistent. Hopefully, Ortiz will settle the lineup and maybe give Ellsy a shot a batting ninth. He needs a break. Tito rope is running out of length.

Masterson might just calm the pen. He made it look easy and the relievers that followed looked better too. Except gas-can. One hot arm can make a huge difference.

Tek is hitting .176...... almost like we have Mirabelli back? :p

Check his historical numbers, though. He's very typically had a weak July but his average August is .840 OPS and September is over 1.000 (I've posted them here (http://www.prosportsdaily.com/forums/showpost.php?p=5983339&postcount=299)). I suspect that the increased pressure brings increased focus for him. We'll see Drew perform well.

PS: Glad you didn't mention him missing games. Oops!

I'm ready to start on Manny now! lol

I'm not bashing Drew just making an observation. I keep hearing people say how he carried us while Ortiz was out, not true. He did for a few weeks.....

Hopefully his August repeats the past performances. We need everyone on board now! No more missteps....
