The Padres have dealt left-hander Randy Wolf to the Astros for Chad Reineke, a Triple-A pitcher who has averaged nearly a strikeout per inning.

A key part of the deal for the Padres is the potential financial savings. Wolf is due a $175,000 bonus for every start he makes up to his 30th start, in addition to pro-rated payments on a $4.75 million salary.

The Padres also have two starting pitchers due to come off the disabled list in coming weeks: Chris Young and Shawn Estes.

Reineke, 26, is 5-9 with a 4.41 ERA. A starter, he has 100 strikeouts and 35 walks in 112.1 innings this season. Entering this year, he had a 3.52 career ERA with a strikeout per inning.

Wolf was 6-10 with a 4.74 ERA. http://www3.signonsandiego.com/weblogs/padres/2008/jul/22/padres-send-wolf-astros/

Does that make any sense at all for the Astros?

Wow. The Astros don't know what they're doing. First of all, they're not contending this year. Second of all, they traded a younger and possibly even better pitcher for an older one. I don't see how they improve with this deal, at all.

i guess chacon beat up Ed Wade real bad and his head is screwed up and he has gone ******** and that's why he made this trade.

maybe this is the astros "response" to the brewers sabathia and the cubs harden?

Yea this is all Ed Wade's doing. Bad move, I totally agree. I hope this is the straw that breaks the camels back and makes Drayton break down and start the team all over. I really do.

What do you expect from Ed Wade? Wolf will get hammered in that ballpark with the short Left Field wall.

I like it a little, we will be a solid #5 starter next year, Astros will sign CC Sabathia and will contend

Wolf's contract is up at the end of the season.

I live in SD and the sports talk guys here are baffled at why the Stros would do this. I've been racking my brain and the only answer I can come up with is maybe through some contract loophole, Wolf's no-trade clause is lifted as soon as he is traded, allowing the Astros to send him to whomever they like. Really, Wolf makes NO sense in Houston for more than the time it takes to turn around and re-trade him.

Maybe they traded for him in hopes that they can get him resigned during this time so they have him in the future

this trade is so ******** .... it makes no sense, shouldn't the astros be sellers not buyers, almost as confusing as the Pirates trade for Matt Morris

wow...astros are bad
That was my first thought, too.

Houston, as of tonight, is 12 games back in the NL Central. I understand they didn't give up much for Wolf, but what reason did they have to bring in a pitcher that is really only going to be ANY help to a contending team that needs a few spot starts?

Just, strange. Maybe Wade is still a bit woozy from Shawn Chacon? I don't know.

What are the Stros doing?

Is it even necessary to make a move when you're a game out of last place? Especially considering you just dealt what little farm system you had left during the winter.

great trade for the padres, horrible for the astros.. padres get a young talent while the stros get a 6-9 pitcher who has a +5 era who is a FA at the end of the year.. doesnt make any sense
