View Full Version : Article on the Swirsk!

Love him or hate him and there are people in both camps there's no denying that the Toronto sports scene won't be quite the same after Chuck Swirsky leaves next week.

Who will scream "kaboom" when a Toronto Raptor executes a highlight-reel slam dunk? Who will say that a three-pointer came "from downtown Oshawa?" Who will keep viewers from changing channels when the Raptors turn in a stinker?

It's hard to believe that 10 years have passed since Swirsky arrived here from Detroit and brought a whole new style to sports broadcasting. His high-energy, over-the-top approach offended many purists and hardcore basketball fans, but it did wonders in turning on the casual fan.

"He helped build a lot of interest in the Raptors," says FAN 590 general manager Nelson Millman, the man who hired Swirsky out of Detroit.

"He brought a lot of energy, a lot of showbiz to the broadcasts."

Showbiz it was and showbiz was exactly what the Raptors needed back then.

Swirsky played a key role in the ascendancy of Vince Carter, whose gravity-defying dunks and eye-popping moves were celebrated in ways Toronto fans had never witnessed. Most memorable was Swirsky's labelling of Carter as "Air Canada."

"The one thing I'm going to miss, and this sounds corny but it's true, I love the makeup and the mosaic fibre of our city. I love the electricity of the city," he said.

"I'm really going to miss the people. I love the country. I will never say one negative thing about the country, the city, the Raptors, because I'm leaving on a high."

Swirsky may have shown a bit more enthusiasm for a Raptor dunk than an opposing one, but he made the broadcasts fun and gave you reasons for watching or listening even if you didn't live and breathe NBA basketball.

He will be missed.

lmao.. "we all know you love dick"

But yea, I loved the Swirsk. He was always positive, and optimistic.. The Raptors could be down by 20 & he would just stay positive about it,and always had hope they would come back & win.You could tell he was a true fan of the team as well.
