View Full Version : Will the decision in the 2005 draft haunt the Milwaukee Bucks and Atlanta Hawks?

The decision that the Bucks made in that draft was select Andrew Bogut #1. He was a good college player, but hasn't played up to expectations of what most would have expected out of him

The Hawks chose Marvin Williams out of UNC as the #2 pick when they desperately needed a PG. The next 2 picks were Deron Williams and CP3.

When done will that mistake by Atlanta prove to be just as bad as the Pistons selecting Darko #2 over Melo, Bosh and Wade?

By the title, you meant "haunt", right?

To answer your question, of course, it will, because those teams could've gotten better players.

Defintely, when you pass up on a player you need (PG) and they turn out to best 2 of the best in the league, it will haunt you.

Yes it will and didn't the hawks already have Josh Smith at SF?? So why Marvin Williams then....

I just put on another forum that Bogut was underrated the guy ended the season hard and finished averaging 14ppg, 10rpg, 2-3apg, 2bpg and shot over 50%....And you say they made a mistake?!?!?!?!?

Next year Milwaukee will have a breakout year....

Jefferson
Mo
Bogut

and as for Atl....as long as they fire Woodson their good

You are correct on that.

Also, Marvin hasn't been a complete bust. 15 and 6 last season isn't too bad. Just should have been picked later, number 2 was too early. But when you could have filled a need with an elite PG, you have to wonder what could have been.

PG: CP3
SG: JJ
SF: Childress
PF: Smith
C: Horford

Thats a scary lineup with loads of potential.

For the Bucks, yeah it sucks, but taking Bogut was absolutely the right decision back in 2005. Atlanta not so much.

Nobody knew Paul and Williams would become superstar point guards. Bogut was the 7 footer, you have to take him first. Marvin had great potential back then.

Hindsights 20/20, but yes for sure. They will be haunted for that one for the next decade. I bet the Hawks are still kicking themselves for not taking Chris Paul...If they had, they'd be a finals contender.

Well right now, both of them have to be kicking themselves. But Andrew Bogut could still be capable of 20-10. Last year he got 14 and 10 in his third year. So for the Bucks, it's not THAT bad. But for the Hawks...that has to hurt. Marvin is a solid player, but I don't think he'll amount to half of Paul or Williams in the NBA.

damn hawks passed on 2 great PGs but is true you cant really tell who will be a bust or a superstar

marvin williams and andrew bogut were the "right" picks back then.
it wasn't as clear cut as oden/durant, beasley/rose, howard/okafor... but everyone thought they had to be the top two picks.

i don't think hawks worst pick was marvin williams. that haunted them a little bit, but picking sheldon williams at #5 haunted them more.
i say that because before the draft, sheldon was projected to be nothing more than a role player and would most likely go around 10 in the draft. but because the hawks screwed up the year before, they rather go for a "sure" thing on sheldon and didn't even trade down to get him.

turned out, sheldon is not even a decent role player (so far), and with the #5 pick, the hawks missed out on brandon roy, rudy gay, and randy foye.

Yup but Atlanta needed a PG and there were 2 very availible point guards.

It's not like the Bucks and the Hawks are the only ones that made the mistake that year. Everyone hade bogut #1 and Williams going #2. You can look back every year and find mishaps. If you put it like that though, then Utah messed up by taking Williams and not Paul, since Paul is better.
