Cubs: Lilly is looking forward to getting off to a better start in the second half. The lefty did win nine games, but in his last outing July 10 against the Reds, he was pulled after 2 2/3 innings. It was his shortest start of the season. Lilly gave up four runs on six hits, including two home runs, in the loss. He was 7-4 in the second half last year.

Astros: Moehler ended his first half on a positive note, allowing four runs over six innings in a win over the Pirates. The right-hander allowed one run over three consecutive starts before yielding five to the Braves on July 4. Moehler faced the Cubs once this year, taking a loss after yielding three runs over five innings. Lifetime vs. the Cubs, Moehler is 1-1 with a 4.18 ERA over seven games (four sarts).

Cubs: The All-Star right-hander will try to pick up where he left off in the second half. Zambrano held the Reds to one hit over eight innings in his last start prior to the break. Big Z was limited to 100-105 pitches in that game because it was his second start after being on the disabled list with a strained right shoulder. In his two starts since coming off the DL, he's given up one run on five hits over 14 innings. This was the second straight first half in which Zambrano won 10 games. Let's see if he can match that in the second half.

Astros: Rodriguez has a 3-4 record and a 4.50 ERA over eight career games vs. the Cubs. He allowed eight hits over 5 1/3 innings against the Nationals on July 12, getting a win despite four earned runs.

Cubs: Dempster ended the first half on a sour note, suffering his first loss at Wrigley Field in 12 starts. The right-hander gave up four runs, seven hits and three walks over 6 2/3 innings in the outing. It's the second time in his dozen starts at home that he's given up four runs. Dempster faced the Astros once this season, May 20, and took the loss.

Astros: Backe had one of his best outings of the season against the Nationals on July 13, shutting Washington out through seven frames on five hits. His previous start against the Pirates lasted only three innings thanks to a nearly three-hour rain delay -- he allowed no runs on three hits. He's 4-2 all-time against Pittsburgh with a 3.09 ERA.

Hopefully Lilly can stop giving up Homeruns to every other hitter he sees. Because that's the main difference between this year and last year IMO, and a Lilly that doesn't give up the HR ball is much is very good.

That being said, this is not the stadium to end that stretch, I say we win the Saturday and Sunday games.

jiggin
07-18-2008, 01:54 PM
I think 2 of 3 is pretty realistic. Cubs need to start these last couple months off with a tear. Tough couple months ahead but the season in 60% over and they are in the drivers seat.

If Lilly pitches the way he did last game, its going to be a long night. That ballpark is a little too easy to get the ball out in certain areas, so no help for him there.

Lets hope the cubs got the rest they need to better their first half performance in the second half and run away with the division. Sure would make the last month a lot easier to deal with, especially all the games against STL and MIL. Only consolation is they play each other a lot too, and they both can't win. :)

If they don't take 2 out of 3 it will be a dissapointment to say the least. As a matter of fact anything less than 4-2 on this trip wouldn't be good. In the arizona series they won't face Haren or Webb and that team can't hit at all. I know the cubs haven't exactly played well on the road but this is a trip where 4-2 is very much in reach.

I have little confidence in Lilly, although he's facing the easiest pitcher for the Cubs to beat in Moehler. Rodriguez seems to have our number a lot, but Z is going so we should be set. Possibly one of those 8 IP for Z and a 1-0 win type games. :puke: And Dempster should hopefully win on Sunday.

EDIT: Who the hell cares how Backe has done against the Pirates? Fix it, GTF. :p

they want to rest the shoulder as much as possible so that he is good down the stretch in Sept and can be used (if they make it) in the playoffs. They have publicly said they may have him miss a start or two in order to keep him healthy and give his arm a break. The All-star break gives them the opportunity to rest his arm like he is missing a start without actually having him miss a start.

I think its a very smart move, not only to rest the arm but because I would rather he face a possible tougher team like the diamondbacks than the astros. It also keeps the rotation lined up perfectly for the first brewers series of 4 games with our best 4 pitchers on the hill against them, throwing Zambrano, Dempster, Harden and Lilly at them. Taking that series would be huge for the NL Central standings. Just my opinion though.

You knew that marching Lilly out there in the 7th to face the meat of the line-up for the 3rd time was playing with fire. That's where Lou should've made the move to the pen to at least mix things up.

These are the games you HAVE to win, especially on the road. I have no idea why Howry was out there again in the 9th. There are some pretty good rested All-Stars in the BP to hold things down.

Consequently, Ankiel just tied it up in STL.
