ESPN is reporting that the Yankees have reached a preliminary agreement with former Seattle 1B/DH Richie Sexson. Thoughts? Is he washed up, or can he help the Yankees?

I know that they didn't sign him for big money, obviously, because he got released. I know it's a low-risk, high reward type of deal. I just want to know if you guys think that he struggled due to the losing atmosphere in Seattle, or if he's done. Personally, I don't think he'll end up making a significant difference for the Yankees.

Not against lefties. He's hitting .344 vs LHP's this year, with a 1.054 OPS, and a .423 OBP.

This is not desperation. If they offered him up some ridiculous contract, then yes, that's desperation. They're taking a flier on him - He's coming in extremely cheap. It's one of those low risk/high reward type of deals.

In other news: Johnny Damon didn’t swing a bat today. But he did swing a broomstick down in Tampa and felt fine, so that’s two consecutive “good days” for him. The plan is to swing at balls off a tee tomorrow. … Brian Bruney will start the second game of a doubleheader for Scranton tonight and is scheduled for two innings. He is getting very close to a return.

More good news. Solidifies our already good bullpen

Sexson sucked at Safeco apparently because he couldn't handle the boos. I'm not really sure what "terrible atmosphere" someone was referring too, because the crowds are a lot more hostile over in Boston and New York than they are in Seattle.

And Beltre hasn't been the bust he's made out to be.

i'm the one who refered to the bad atmosphere...i guess i should have been more specific...it's a losing atmosphere. and while some may not feel that beltre has been a nust for seattle, they cannot deny that he has not come close to his '04 year with the dodgers, regardless if it was a contract year.

Richie Sexson = Shawn Chacon

Do0msday
07-17-2008, 07:47 PM
I wouldn't mind that at all since Chacon was a huge part of the Yankees' winning a few years back when desperate for pitching. If Sexson can come in and provide much needed power off the bench, at the expense of only costing a few hundred thousand, then I don't mind whatsoever.

HighVelocity
07-17-2008, 07:52 PM
I think this is a good signing by the Yankees. Sexson will be useful when they are against a left-handed pitcher. A 344 batting average against left-handers is a good enough reason to sign him. From what I have seen this year, the Yankees have had trouble hitting left-handed pitchers because of the many left-handed hitters they have in their lineup. I think just about everyone has noticed that. On the other hand, you can't expect him to due well against right-handed pitchers. This was an important pick-up for the Yankees, because it can really benefit their team if Sexson does well.

Sox have shown little to no interest in Bonds...he will not be playing here...and how exactly do you know that Papi won't be the same? Do you have a crystal ball? He has been hitting the ball very well in BP, and is about to start a 6 game rehab stint. He will then return for the Yankees series.

Well to be fair, he's mashed lefties this season, but it's only been in 61 AB. Last season he was a little below average against lefties (.752 OPS). Though it should be noted Safeco depletes right handed power by 17% (thank you USS Mariner), and Yankee stadium is a fairly hitter friendly environment.

Though Sexson claimed that he sucked at home because of the boos. Good luck in the Bronx.
