small market team can't pay the big bucks so ship them off at their highest value

^Yep pretty much sums it up those are all 10mil plus a season pitchers you cant have a rotation that cost over 50 mill a year when the A's are a small market team

Well that would be the rotation if Al Davis owned the team... but they are okay where they are now.

Why??
Imagine that rotation

Zito's been a huge bust, Mulder has been incredibely injury prone (and he was traded for Haren, Barton, and Kiko Calero, great value)

Harden and Haren were just traded because they wouldn't be able to afford them and they got some very nice spects

I don't get it:

Barry Zito - Too much money (seriously?)
Mark Mulder - Injury prone...traded FOR Dan Haren
Tim Hudson - This was the one bad trade
Dan Haren - Got a GREAT return (Carlos Gonzalez, Eveland, Smith, Anderson, Carter
Rich Harden - Could be the next Mulder

Why??
Imagine that rotation

It's amazing that they can have such an amazing farm system to pump out so many good pitchers and still have a rotation coming up like they do

Im pretty sure Haren came to Oakland in the Mulder trade so their is no way both could be in the same rotation... Never would have got Haren if they didnt give up Mulder

Its because they trade their premium players for high-chip prospects, who turn into premium players who they trade for high-chip prospects...and so on. Also Billy Beane is amazing at judging baseball talent, and a great negotiator...if you want one of his players, your gonna overpay for them.

All those trades were pretty much great wins for A's, cant blame them at all. Dan haren's trade was the biggest rape in history imo

Not to mention Zito and Mulder are no help right now.

They don't need to keep those high profile pitchers because of the money and it doesn't matter anyway because they have a great system that keeps producing pitching prospects.

Yet more evidence that Billy Beane and his crazy stats don't ever work!!!11!1!

One of the GM's that's actually smarter than Beane, outsmarted him :)

He kind of made up for it with the Devine/Kotsay trade though.

He's no longer the GM though right? Just president?

Twitchy

Yeah, he's the president now. I don't know if he was president before or after this move was made though.

think about the Marlins rotation as well

Josh Beckett
Dontrelle Willis(when he was good)
AJ Burnett
Brad Penny
Carl Pavano(18 win season with Fish)

Oh I can imagine it alright and I rather not. Thank god BB got rid of them. The only one I didn't understand was Zito. It seems they just let him go to free agency without getting anything but draft picks for him.

To tell the truth, that isn't even that good of a rotation.

Yeah, he's the president now. I don't know if he was president before or after this move was made though.

I don't believe he was the GM at the time.

Penny, Pavano and Willis all suck now
They did last year too (disregard Penny's deceptive low ERA)

To tell the truth, that isn't even that good of a rotation.

:laugh2:

Yeah, I'd hate to have three aces in Haren, Hudson and Harden too.

The other big 3 :)

I'm pretty sure Schuerholz was GM when the trade was made, he only left his GM post before 2007, or something like that.

The A Team
07-17-2008, 10:58 AM
^^Yea.

Beane turns 1 pitcher into several useful pieces that help the club. Can't argue with that. He almost always gets a big time pitcher back in return too (Meyer being the lone exception)
