Best catcher in baseball?

Overall I'd have to go with Russ Martin.

Soto shouldn't be in there.

He is too young, and will eventually be better.. He is almost as good as them and is only a rookie.

Please vote in the poll, I want to tally up. And I only put Soto in there because I didn't want to get bashed by Cubs homers:shrug:

So you left the best catcher in the game out....why?

Maybe he should have done best catcher in the NL.

I still think Martin > Mauer.

I still think Martin > Mauer.

Based on?

Mauer 127 OPS+
Martin 110 OPS+

Case closed.

 Martin and Soto are both 25 while Martin has been in the bigs and proved himself. Martin is superior to Soto in just about every category except power.

:laugh2:

I just wanted to piss you off.

I do agree.. Mauer is the best catcher in baseball.

Puts up great numbers, just not power.. and is a good defender.

Mauer's younger AND better than both.

Meh, I consider SLG to be power.

I agree Mauer trumps all three of them.

Meh, I consider SLG to be power.

I consider homeruns to be power..

Not saying I like homeruns and they're a good stat, but I just consider power to be the ability to hit the long ball.

He also wasn't comparing Mauer to McCann. He was comparing Mauer to Martin.

If it was "who is the best hitting catcher in baseball" Mauer would take it.

But I believe the thread is called "who is the best catcher in baseball".

So shouldn't we be talking about who is the best in the "catching" aspect?

If this is the case, catchers of the likes of Varitek or Rodriguez should be on the list as well. Not just Mauer.

brandonwarne52

I think it would mean overall.

Brad Ausmus is good at catching a ball; doesn't mean I want his *** anywhere near my ML club.

The Lizard King

Of coarse. That was kinda my point. ;)

I haven't seen a thing in this thread about passed balls or ability to call a game etc.

Only OPS+

He may have the greatest difference between hitting and catching of any MLB catcher I have ever seen.

Anyways..... This poll is ridiculous.

Another question: who of the current catchers could come close to Piazza's numbers?

brandonwarne52
07-16-2008, 01:42 PM
None of them will. Mauer has the best OPS+ of them, and he's not close.

Mauer overall. In the NL, either one of the M boys.

Mauer is easily the best catcher in baseball.

Out of the 3 catchers in the poll, I took Russell Martin.

Being a Braves Fan... my heart with with McCann.. Ihaven't had the chance to watch Martin or Soto.. but IMO McCann is Clutch hitter he can call a good game but cant really throw all that good

Mauer is better than these three, but if I were to choose one, Martin hands down.

Martin and Mauer are about the same offensive wise. On the defensive end Martin is better. I'll take Martin over any catcher in the MLB.

I voted Martin, but Mauer is definetly the best.
