ESPN is reporting that Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez will opt our of his contract at the end of this season to test the free agent waters. Rodriguez leads the majors in saves at the break, with 38 in 41 chances. Here's the article:

I hope the White Sox will make him an offer. Jenks also becomes a FA at the end of the season. Jenks is losing velocity on his fastball and has landed on the DL this year. And K-Rod is younger.

I say pay the bastard, and let Arredondo set up. Clearly we're going to need whatever pitching we've got for the foreseeable future, because they're not doing much in the way of a big bat.

But hey, GMJ is making a lot of money, so who can complain?

Come on Nate.. How many nervous saves does K rod have? Its rarely an easy slam the door shut type of save with him. And he wouldnt have as many saves as he does if our offene wasnt so bad the 1st half.

You know just as well as I do that Arrendondo has better stuff than franky right now.. I would push to re- sign him for a reasonable offer but not at what he has been requesting and what he will most likely get on the free agent market. He wants 5 years at 15- 16 per ?? No way I do that. His velocity and control have already declined considerably

If he wants to hold the franchise hostage let him go to the Yankees and spend that dough on a bat.

I wish he wasnt all about the money. It annoys me. Does he really need 15M a year? Who does? Does anyone even spend like 5M a year? This is ridiculous. I wish we could keep him, but he will land on the DL a bunch of times with his delivery. I really like Arredondo. But since Scot Shields is getter older, I say we resign him and have Arredondo be the 8th inning guy.

I dont see why he would want to choose free agency. It would be dumb if he left the Angels. They give him a lot of save opportunities and just about every other high revenue club has a closer. Only team I see possible would be the Indians.

odiz
07-14-2008, 11:15 PM
I could see him getting something like a 5 year $100 mil deal. Hell only be 27 and quite possibly coming off the best season any closer has ever had. Rivera got $15 mil a year last year as 35 or 36 year old coming off a pretty average year.

The Indians arent really a big market team i doubt they could afford him and it looks like their kind of rebuilding.
The Tigers maybe? Todd Jones isnt exactly lights out also i could see the Cardinals going after him with Izzy pretty much done.

If he tests the market, he will be in NY next season. Maybe as a met, maybe as a yankee.

I dont see why the NY teams wouldn't go after him. Wagner and Rivera are both old, they will retire soon.

It's not going to be the Yankees, considering Mo is still under contract for two full seasons AFTER this one.

Yeah, definitely don't see the Yankees getting him. They have a ton of money coming off the books but I really can't see a $30 million setup/closer combo.

He seems to be chasing every last dollar though so I'm sure he wouldn't mind setting up for 2 years if the Yankees pay him the most money. I don't think the Yanks want to put that much into a guy who will be a set-up man for 2 years though.

BrianWestKins

He's a Closer. What motivation does he have to move to SU? Because in 2011 he'll be a Closer again?

If the Yankees offered $100 million while the next closest was $50 million, I'd understand why he'd be a Yankee. But that's just not going to happen. A team like the Tigers (Who also have a ton of cash coming off the books) is going to go hard after him, considering they don't have a Closer period.

The Padres are another team in the same boat as the Tigers; Both have very few options after this season.

The difference, though, is that the Tigers are willing to spend the cash, while the Padres probably aren't.

I wouldn't be overly surprised if he did end up resigning with the Angels after all, A-Rod style (with the obvious difference of A-Rod opting out and K-Rod just being at the end of his current contract).

We're giving like $50 million to a guy in GMJ that has had 6 of 10 seasons with an OPS+ under 100 (including this season's 77) for the love of God. Pitching is clearly huge on our team, since scoring runs doesn't seem to be a big concern with anyone in charge. Shields isn't getting any younger, Speier isn't getting anymore effective (or younger), soon our bullpen is going to be Arredondo and freakin' Darrin Oliver.

It would be kind of ridiculous if he did go somewhere else, considering Jenks and Turnbow were both in the Angels organization, then went somewhere else and had some success, and then he could turn around and do the same thing (though arguably better success both with the Angels and afterwards).

Keep scaring the sh** out of Angel fans with his nervous saves for the rest off the season. Save 3 of the 4 wins as We win the world series. In the offf seaason he signs for 5 years at 16 mil per with the Yankees, Mets or Tigers...His Velocity drops off even lower than it is now 92- 93 to 89 - 90 which makes his slurve less effective he has mostly mediocre years but makes a boat load of cash to "take care of his family" retires as one of the best closers in this era..Thats my prediction.

Meanwhile Arredondo takes over at closer for the Angels next year and we don't miss a beat. The offense will be upgraded with the money we save on Frankie so Jose wont have as much pressure closing out one run games all the time
