Ichiro Suzuki has declined an invitation to participate in the Home Run Derby because of tightness in his hamstring.
"Yes, I was asked," Ichiro said Saturday. "But because of my hamstring, I decided not to participate." Simple as that. He still plans to play in the All-Star Game on Tuesday.

i know he has a little pop, but why would they even ask him?

Because they've always said if Ichiro tried to hit home runs, he could hit a lot. But that's not the type of player he is. He probably would have surprised a lot of people if he had been in it.

Last year he said he wanted to do it I believe.

This would be a terrible idea, think of how long the derby would take with him in it. After every swing he took they would have to wait for him to walk back from half way down the first baseline after every swing he takes.

I bet Ichiro would do really well in a home run derby.

i was just going to say that, he would be running up to swing every time. i could imagine him running and bunting the first time and a perfect bunt and somebody would have to explain it to him after he sprinted up the line. lol that would be funny

That would have been pretty cool to watch.

LOST^^^^^!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D

He probably would take away that lunge toward 1st base if he participates. He loses a lot of power through that.

Hopefully he'll participate in it next year.

If Ichiro wanted he could hit 40-50 HRS however as he said before it would make him a .250 BA hitter and would not be able to use his speed.

I would want to see him in that.

:eyebrow: 40 or 50? are you insane? They say he has power but not elite power. I'm pretty sure if the Mariners thought he could hit 40 or 50 home runs they'd tell him to do that and gladly take a crummy batting average. 40 or 50...LOL.

He supposedly puts on a great show sometimes during BP...

God, him hitting it out of that short porch in RF at Yankee Stadium would have been a blast.

I saw him in BP once. He crushes the ball.

If I was the M's, I'd rather have ichiro hitting .250 with 40-50 HRs and the slightly lower steals he gets with his speed, lol

might come as a surprise, but a couple of years ago at a cubs vs reds game, matt murton put on a show in BP he hit like 7 or 8 in a row deep into seats at great american ball park, all the fans were pumped, lol, it was amazing

At the all star game last year Ichiro had by FAR the best BP power wise. Even at AT&T (which favors right handed power hitters much more then left handed power hitters) he was hitting bomb after bomb after bomb. It was amazing. Even with the best hitters from the MLB all there, none of them came close. I would love to see what he could do in the HR derby

Although I agree with you on the Ichiro gave us a show front (the dude has awesome power, always hits jacks at bp and he's usually the alternate if someone pulls out the day of), I disagree with none of them came close.

I was working out by the glove, Carlos effing Lee almost hit me twice. Scared the **** out of me. Literally.

CC should be in it haha. You see those 2 bombs he's hit this year?

WOwolfOL

Ichiro shouldn't do it until he's 40... and then just unload on em.

I wouldnt. Thats like saying youd take Adam Dunn over Tony Gwynn with 40sb speed.

I dont believe Ichiro could hit 40-50. I've never seen him take BP or anything.. But its more beneficial for his team if he does hit 40-50 and a 250 BA as opposed to his regular approach. Probably have to suffer with a .300 OBP if he did that though. All in all I think it would benefit his team if he did.

Can't you just picture Ichiro hitting in the three hole, absolutely pimping out every bomb he hits, all 4 feet of him. The fact that this guy has power is a testament to how good of a ball player he is, because he is so tiny, and so weak 'looking'.

Adam Dunn '07 .264 40Hr 106Rbi 117 RUNS CREATED

Ichiro '07 .341 6Hr 68Rbi 121 RUNS CREATED

And thats with Dunn hitting .264 not .250 and with Dunn walking as much as he does his OBP was .386. No way Ichiro would walk that much if he was lengthening his swing.
