Jul 7 The Associated Press reports Chicago Cubs SP Carlos Zambrano was elected to start for the National League All-Star team.

If that's the case, it is because of when the other top candidates are scheduled to pitch. Lincecum and Webb for example is pitching Sunday. Volquez is Saturday.

The way the rest works out gives Z the nod.

wow, some people were arguing zambrano shouldn't have made the team, let alone start the game

9-3 2.96 ERA. 73 K's, 38 walks.

I don't see any reason why he shouldn't be in the game.

First Volquez then SI boy then Webb now Zambrano.... what a mess.

Why because I am a Cubs fan? Give me a break.

Any starter with a sub 3 ERA and has as many starts as Z has deserves to be in the game.

Lucky break for him I guess?

Brandon Webb is also pitching tomorrow as is Lincecum, so if the schedules are the same, they both will be pitching Sunday.

Edinson Volquez's next start is scheduled at Saturday. Logical choice is Zambrano the way he is pitching this year. Plus, his next scheduled start is on Wednesday, so he would have more rest then guys like Sheets, and Haren who both pitch on Thursday.

Cannot really argue against it, maybe he throws a water cooler in the middle of the first have serving up a three run jack to A Rod.

No you give me a break. It should be Lincecum or Volquez end of discussion.

Pay attention.

They can't start because Lincecum starts Sunday and Volquez starts Saturday. Pitchers need rest.

End of discussion.

I wouldn't even bother with some of these people.

It's obvious that Z isn't the best pitcher in the NL, but some posters refuse to ignore the more obvious ingredients to this discussion.

I don't see any reason why he shouldn't be there.

Santana has more Ks, less walks, more innings, and the same era...He is not in the ASG.

If I had said he shouldn't be there that comment would be relevant.

I'll stick with what I said. Any pitcher with that many starts and a sub 3 ERA should be in the game....including Santana.

I'm indifferent. A-Rod will take him deep in his first AB.

Talking trash about an all star game

Classic....

Anyway, for the record, Arod is 3-5 against Big Z lifetime. 1 double, 2 singles, no homers.

Not really. Just felt like making a random statement. Its 1:50 AM here, I have nothing better to do.

Good, because Zambrano has only given up 7 homers in 112 innings this year. ;)

We all know he's a headcase though, so I won't be surprised if he freaks out and gets lit up in the ASG.

Lincecum doenst even ice his arm. I pretty sure he can go 1 or 2 innings. Im pretty sure if they came up to him they would move his start to Sat for him to start the ASG.

Either way Lincecum and Volquez are more deserving and if Zambrano starts its only bc of the scheduling conflict.

:pity:

Why would any major league manager allow his young pitcher to start on short rest Saturday or push it in the ASG? That's just beyond stupid.

And nobody has said Zambrano deserves it over them. I believe my very words in the original post of this thread stated as much speaking of the scheduling conflict.

Wrigley never even said Z was the most qualified to START. He simply said he deserves his all-star spot.

Nothing better than having a pointless argument at 2:15 in the morning, eh?

Also take into consideration Soto is catching. Why not start the game with a battery that knows eachother pretty well.

I'm a Cubs Fan. But if Sheets is pitching on Thursday, that would give him normal rest between starts. As much as I love Big Z, Sheets is more deserving.

Varitek would end up very much on the losing end of that. Much like Wilson ended up on the losing end of his "battle" with Farnsworth.

It depends, does .215 boy get to keep his mask on, like when he cheap-shotted A-Rod?

I'll go with Big Z, Mr. 215 hasn't made solid contact with anything for about a month and a half.
