Never has Baron been considered the best PG, or even one of the best. He's always been second fiddle, to guys like Kidd, Payton, Nash, Iverson, Marbury etc. If you aren't the best ever when you played, you can't be in the all-time discussion. Plus, his career 17/7/4 isn't worthy of best ever conversation. Hell, Marbury is 20/8/3.

Read up on the best ever. Baron isn't even close to being worthy.

My top 10.

1. Magic
2. Oscar
3. Isiah
4. Stockton
5. Kidd
6. West
7. Payton
8. Cousy

And Steve Nash is not overrated. I used to hate, but he is damn good.

He is one of the best passers ever, and a very, very underrated scorer. He's a career 43% three point shooter, and a career 49% shooter overall. Those percentages for a PG are INSANE. Only Magic and Stockton had a higher FG%, and none of the potential greatest have a higher career 3 point %.

I'd actually rank Nash higher in hindsight. If he wins a championship, he's top 5 all time in my books, ahead of Kidd.

I know the site just crapped out...hence the QUADRUPLE post....

Cousy was an innovator, but that doesn't mean he was the greatest. He did more for PGs than any other point guard, but people have done it better than him since him. Payton was an amazing defender, probably the best defensive guard ever. Cousy also had the luxury of playing on great teams, with great players...Payton not so much. Cousy was horrible offensively, besides his amazing ability to pass. He was a horrible shooter, and an inefficient scorer. He gets more credit that he deserves because he innovated the position, and was the first great point guard. But that doesn't mean he was the best.

I never saw Cousy play, besides some clips, but I saw tons of Payton. From what I've heard/seen/stats have told me about Cousy, Payton was a better shooter, scorer, defender...but not as good of a passer, or perhaps leader.

I stand by Payton being ahead of Cousy.

yea but IN HIS TIME cousy was the greatest and gary payton was put behind other point guards

You're right, because Cousy invented the position. But Payton, along with others I listed, perfected it. Props for Cousy for basically inventing the position as it is today, but he didn't perfect it. I understand why people love him, and I personally love Celtic history, but he gets overrated because he was the first, and because of the great teams he played on. I remember watching Payton play sometimes, and he blew my mind. He was such a great defender, an amazing athlete, and could score far more efficiently than Cousy.

Just look at Cooz's career FG%. It is 37.5%. That is bad. You can't spin it any other way.

know its the fact that you come on this forum and write a thread saying that baron davis and chris paul are two of the top 10 pg's ever. How in the hell came you make that statement and not expect me too tell you that you know nothing?

Dalionking
07-04-2008, 12:49 AM
you have to admit that badizzleboy has a point about davis and cp3. paul is great but only a couple years now and davis would have a tough time even getting into the HOF right now. he has some work to do

cmellofan15

no thats my oppinion i think in their era they dominated and i still think baron is one of the most dominant point guards in the league. did u see wat he did to kirilenko??? nba.com has that as the best dunk in playoff history and he is also one of the biggest (strengthwise) point guards in the league

BADizzleBoY
07-04-2008, 12:53 AM
so, you are basing him being the best pg in the nba because he dominated in the for once PLAYOFFS (dont get me wrong he did) and dunked on a guy who is headed into a downward spiral. Hmm, ya know cmellofan I am seeing things clearly now. You are right.

Dalionking
07-04-2008, 12:54 AM
great so he dunked on ak47, so what! what does that have to do with being a great point gaurd? does that mean that john starks should be up there for his dunk on the bulls in the playoffs or kevin johnson for dunking on hakeem? look, we get that you have a huge man crush on davis but you asked the question about best in history and he is not on that list.

How many championship rings did John Stockton and Oscar Robertson won during their prime?

Thomas is the best player of the Badboys Pistons, and Stockton's advantage to Zeke is his longevity, but the guy didn't won an NBA Championship after being paired with the 2nd greatest PF of all time Karl Malone.

That is how the Spurs fans always use that argument that Tim Duncan is the greatest PF of all time because he had 4 NBA Championship rings while Malone had a fat zero.

Zeke is a better individual player than Stockton, and team success is one of the criteria in ranking the NBA player on the all time lists.

Beside you don't know anything about the NBA History if you think Prime Stockton is a better player than Prime Isiah Thomas because the 6'1" Zeke won 2 NBA Championship rings in the most competitive era in the history of the League, and he is also a 2 time NBA ALL STAR MVP. ( 1984 and 1986). Zeke also had one of the most memorable playoffs performance against the New York Knicks in the 1984 playoffs after he scored 16 points in the last 94 seconds of regulation to send Game 5 into overtime. ( the infamous Isiah Thomas vs. Bernard King Duel)

During the 1990 NBA Finals Isiah Thomas was voted NBA Finals Most Valuable Player of after averaging 27.6 points per game, 7.0 assists per game, and 5.2 rebounds per game in the series againts the Portland Trailblazers.

Isiah Thomas

Regular Season

19.2 ppg, 9.3 apg, 3.6 rpg, 1.9 spg, 0.3 bpg

Playoffs

20.4 ppg, 8.9 apg, 4.7 rpg, 0.5 bpg, 2.1 spg

Honors: Elected to Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame (2000); NBA champion (1989, '90); NBA Finals MVP (1990); All-NBA First Team (1984, '85, '86); All-NBA Second Team (1983, '87); NBA All-Rookie Team (1982); 12-time NBA All-Star (1982-93); NBA All-Star Game MVP (1984, '86); J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award (1987); One of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History (1996).

John Stockton

Regular Season

13.1 ppg, 10.5 apg, 2.2 spg, 0.2 bpg, 2.7 rpg

Playoffs

13.4 ppg, 10.1 apg, 0.28 bpg, 1.9 spg, 3.34 rpg

Honors: All-NBA First Team (1994, '95); All-NBA Second Team (1988, '89, '90, '92, '93, '96); All-NBA Third Team (1991, '97, '99); All-Defensive Second Team (1989, '91, '92, '95, '97); 10-time NBA All-Star; One of 50 Greatest Players in NBA History ('96)

I know many people in this board dislike Isiah because he is one of the worst GM in the NBA, but Isiah the basketball player is one of the greatest player of all time, and if not for the emergence of Bird, Jordan and Magic in the 1980's he could very well be a 3X NBA Regular Season MVP, and Prime Isiah Thomas is one of the most explosive PG during his prime.

John Stockton- BEST PG PERIOD end of story. and not just because im a Jazz fan. WHO hold the Records for Steal and assists. JOHN STOCKTON. the only thing he lack was a RING. but still the best pg to ever play the game. his records will never be beat. i read somewhere that it would take Nash another 14 seasons to beat john stockton. that goes to show you how good he was. that his records are impossible to beat in the time that he did it.

Now i know he never one mvp. or a championship. and he wasnt a 20pt per game player. but he was, what a pure pg should be. a FACILITATOR. he created plays for the other teamates. plus even though the jazz went to the finals twice and lost. it kind of hard to win. against Micheal jordan and the BULLS.

Isiah Thomas and the Detroit Pistons beat Jordan's team 3X times in the Playoffs, and I was a Bulls fan when i was a kid because my dad was born in Chicago, and i still think that the 1996 Chicago Bulls is the greatest team of all time.

I think people are underrating Isiah Thomas in this forum, but if you watched some of his greatest game in Vintage NBA TV prime Zeke is the 2nd best PG in the 1980's behind Magic Johnson.

http://www.youtube.com/results?q=Isiah+Thomas+&search_type=

The Badboys Pistons led By Isiah Thomas also defeated Larry Bird's Celtics in the 1988 Eastern Conference Finals, and they also have the distinction of being the only NBA team in History to beat the Showtime Los Angeles Lakers and Larry's Boston Celtics in the post season.

John Stockton was a great PG, but he was the Jazz 2nd scoring option during his prime, and even though he played with Karl Malone. The Jazz never won an NBA Championship in the 1990's.

Prime Isiah was a 2 time NBA Champion, and i would rank him over Stockton because he was a better team leader, better scorer, and better playoffs performer.

I hate to keep saying this, but why do you people keep out Allen Iverson?

You people act like he's still not holding the highest and most consistent scorer in the game (currently) title. He's still behind MJ and Wilt... And he's still the 2nd highest playoff scorer in the game being behind Mike... You people are letting LeBron, Kobe, and Shaq fog your vision... Real ****.

He's loosely 6 foot, 33 years old, and he's still doing damage. Ever since he lost interest in the Sixers people view him alot differently.

But yeah Magic Johnson is #1 on the list. Before anyone you people say.

Isiah Thomas is great too. Chris Paul? Wow. The new generation Isiah Thomas on sterroids (hah).

Really though Chris Paul is going to blow up. Only his third year and he's a nominee on the ESPY's for Best Player in the NBA next to Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, and Kevin Garnett.

Can't wait to see him from years to come

Well you should watch some old tapes of guys like Walt Frazier, Isaiah Thomas, Bob Cousy, and others.....Steve Nash has had some great seasons and put up some great numbers and is a HOFer and IMO a top ten PG ofv All-Time...but no way is hbe the second best PG ever....you look at Steve Nash's career stats....we'll ignore his bad defense...here is how he compares to other top ten guys as far as careers go....

Steve Nash- 14PPG, 7.9 assists, 2 time MVP, 6 time All-Star, no championships

Isaiah Thomas- 19.2 PPG, 9.3 APG, 12 time-All-Star, 2 time NBA Champion (1 Finals MVP)

Walt Frazier- 18.9 PPG, 7 APG, 7 time All-Star, 7 time All defense, 2 time NBA champion

Oscar Robertson- 25.7 PPG, 9.5 assists, 1 time MVP, 12 time All-Star, 1 championship

Bob Cousy- 18.4 PPG, 7.5 APG, 13 time All-Star, 6 time NBA champion, 1 time MVP

Magic Johnson- 19.5PPG, 11.2 APG, 12 time All-Star, 3 time MVP, 3 time Finals MVP, 5 time NBA champion

Tiny Archibald- 18.8 PPG, 7.4 APG, 6 time All-Star, 1 NBA Championship

John Stockton- 13.1 PPG, 10.5 APG, 10 time All-Star, 5 time All-Defense, 0 championships

Gary Payton- 16.3 PPG, 6 APG, 9 time All-Star, 1 time DPOY, 1 time NBA Champion, 9 time All-Defense

Jason Kidd- 14.5 PPG, 9.2 APG, 9 time All-Star, 9 time All-defense, 0 championships

You see, his career has not come close to alot of these guys...his highest scoring average as an NBA player is lower than the career scoring averages of Thomas, Frazier, Magic, Oscar, and is about the same as Tiny....he has gotten alot of assists in the past few seasons but his career average is lower than everyone outside of Frazier....
