From WashingtonPost.com (http://blog.washingtonpost.com/wizardsinsider/2008/07/arenas_agrees_to_take_around_1.html)

One quote from Gilbert Arenas says it all: "What can I do for my family with $127 million that I can't do with $111 million?"

Arenas told me a little while ago that he has agreed to a six-year, $111 million contract. The Wiz had offered the maximum level contract, one that would have paid him between $125 to $127 million over six years. Arenas said he is willing to take less in order to help the Wizards have room to add key pieces over the next few seasons. The deal still has to be finalized once the league releases salary cap and luxury tax numbers next week but Arenas said his mind is made up.

"We have another room to add a piece," Arenas said. "There is a window of opportunity open for us. Adding key pieces leads to championships and that's what we all want."

I'm surprised the Warriors didn't push harder for him. They are in trouble if they don'y wind up signing or trading for someone big.

Well the Wizards need another piece....so the Wizards should be doing cartwheels about not having to pay him that ridiculous contract.....

Why is it Baron Davis got 13 mill a year, where Gilbert gets 19 mill, CP3 gets 23 mill, and Brand is going to get 15-18 mill. Makes no sense.

Actually they probably should just think about rebuilding....they aren't a championship team and now they aren't even a contender in the West for a playoff spot....

Yeah, I love how he is getting payed 2 million less a year than the original deal and he is acting like that money can be put towards bringing in another "key piece".

I think the Wizards should have gone after another PG like Baron Davis who will be getting paid less and then have the money to look for other bench players to make this team one of the east's elite teams.

well baron and brand both turned down more money for a better shot at winning. they are taking less so they can play together as well.

Yeah, but Gil, is 26-27, and baron is 29-30, Cp3 is like 23 and Brand is 29-30, so age and skill all makes up these contracts

the other thing that he said was "what can i do for my family with 127 million that i cant do with 111 million, give 2 mill and ill invest and double it, if i were an nba player i would have a franchise business and be a billionaire entrepanuer, i would invest in hotels and homes(rentals), and would recommend teams to stay at my hotels so the league would pay me more money outside of contracts :D

It's just money! Lets face it, Arenas is definately in the top 5 of players that you want to have the ball in crunch time, especially if you are looking for a game winning shot. Does he deserve all that money right now in his career, has he proven to be worth it? Probably not, but it's not my money and obviously the franchise believes he's worth it, and other teams like the Warriors were willing to give him a big payday so maybe he is. Bottom line, the Wizards better get to the conference finals otherwise anything less is a disappointment in my opinion. Detroit wont be the same, Cleveland changes their players around lebron like every year-they wont be a factor, so I believe the Wizards should be in the conference finals due to having the consistency on their roster and being there before.

He's not getting paid this much because they think that he's that skilled or that talented. He's a terrific player but that's not the reason why they are paying him the "big bucks". It's because he gets people to buy merchandise and puts fans into seats. He's a marketing dream! The bottom line is as long as he keeps yapping, blogging, and stirring up controversy he'll keep people coming back for more. He'll have people buying his jerseys, buying season tickets, and spending more money. It's all about the money!!!

Gilbert Arenas - Impossible is O

Gilbert Arenas was an MVP Candidate back in the 2006-07 NBA Season, and i remember he was ranked as the 8th best player based on the results of the MVP Voting.

2006-07 NBA Season

28.4 ppg, 6.0 apg, 4.6 rpg, 1.9 spg, 0.2 bpg, .418 FG %, .844 FT %

http://www.basketball-reference.com/awards/awards_2007.html#mvp

That is one of the most impressive stats line for a Combo Guard in this decade, and a motivated Gilbert Arenas can destroy your favorite team in the regular season.

He also put up some excellent numbers back in the 2005-06 NBA Season.

29.3 ppg, 6.1 apg, 2.0 spg, 0.3 bpg, .447 FG %, .820 FT %

and if Agent Zero is playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers it will improve our chances to win an NBA Championship next year.

Arenas have an outstanding NBA Career for a guy that is drafted in the 2nd round of the 2001 NBA Draft, and being a fan of the Cleveland Cavaliers i would admit he is the best player that the Cavaliers face in the first round of the playoffs.

Arenas 2006 Playoffs Stats

34.0 ppg, 5.3 apg, 5.7 rpg, 2.2 spg, 0.7 bpg

A Healthy Arenas > Caron Butler > Antawn Jamison > Deshawn Stevenson
