View Full Version : Sixers may find love a fragile thing

The Wizards (Antawn Jamison, presumably Gilbert Arenas) and Clippers (Baron Davis) have made big moves so far on the free agent market. That can only mean one thing ... Philadelphia 76ers. You are on the clock!

The Sixers -- one of the few teams with salary-cap room -- finally got in the game Wednesday, welcoming Hawks restricted free agent Josh Smith for a visit to the City of Brotherly Love. They pulled out all the usual stops for the athletic 6-9 forward: the jersey in the locker, the face on the scoreboard, a tour of the city that also included lunch with the mayor.

GM Ed Stefanski also no doubt mentioned that the Sixers can offer Smith a chance to play for a young fast-break style team -- as well as a boatload of money, perhaps as much as $66 million over five years.

"They fit the style of play that I like to play, which is up-tempo," Smith told reporters at the airport. "They have great talent. This is one of the teams that I'm looking at."

The problem for the Sixers, however, is that they don't get to make the call.

Smith is a restricted free agent, so the Hawks still own the right to match any offer he receives. New GM Rick Sund has said he intends to do so. That means the Sixers could be left waiting for as many as seven days after July 9 -- the first day contracts or offer sheets can be signed -- to find out whether the Hawks decide to keep Smith.

Philly is wasting their time...Atlanta will match any offer.

They need to go after Ben Gordon and then move Iggy to SF. Rumors have it that Gordon wants more than 10 million and if all plans fail, he should be a big priority. He could be a number 1 scorer for Philly. I think he is a great fit. I really dont think Iggy is a number 1 scorer.

atlanta won't match because the 6ers went over the 11mil offer they gave him unfortunally that's over their budget.

Iggy has the potential to be the number one scorer, he just needs to improve his mid range/ outside game.

I believe that if we can get a trade done with another team and release cap space and maybe have around 13 million or 15 million, we can easily get smith.

y wud u give him a 13-15 mil deal...

Smith gets 11-12 max.
A team makes the playoffs and lets go their 2nd best player who is a young stud, that's what gets GM's fired.

I agree with you but how else are we gonna get him, Atlanta can match any offer, but will they pay 13 million to get him? I don't think so. Sixers have a 50-50 chance of getting him. BE AGGRESSIVE SIXERS!!!

if the 76ers get smith theyre automatically top 4 in the east... behind my celtics of course and theyre right up there with the raptors and pistons...

they would be able to dunk over everyone, but they still wouldn't have a guy who could hit the broad side of a barn with the ball...

They still need someone who can shoot the rock...

ya theyre top 3 scorers wouldnt be very good jump shooters and that would kill them against good defenses... the add in dalambert who cant shoot to save his life...

But that's why it has been reported that after they sign/trade for a PF, they are going for a shooter via FA right away. (James Jones, etc...)

James Jones and Josh Smith. I GUARANTEE those are the two players we get.

Josh Smith will not be a Sixer. The Hawks will not let him walk. If anything they would match and trade him before the deadline to get something back. Under no circumstances would they just let a young future star walk for a contract that really isnt even that big now a days in the NBA.

Josh Smith is a very good player and will get better, but he's not worth 66 mil over 5 years. Yes he is a block party and can jump out of the arena but he doesn't have a jump shot, and I also question his mental toughness. He was not a factor in the playoffs and never was able to get back on track. He's a good player but he's not going to make the 6ers contenders. He's an exciting player, but I think a lot of people are overestimating his value. I'd give him 5 years, 58 million TOPS. I'd even be hesitant to do that though.

ha me too man.

at best we could be the Third best team in the east next season with our athleticism and run and dunk game.

at worst.... we lose

but we still have the most ahtletic/fastest/dunkadelic/ and did i say athletic?
team in NBA history.

Name another team in NBA history that had 2 PREMIERE dunkers, AND 6 other guys who can throw down sicknasty dunks as well.

Yeah no doubt in my mind that if we kept Iggy and acquired Smith we'd be one of the most athletic teams in NBA history. Eddie's plan would almost be complete (dump Willie for another athletic shooter a la James Jones), but I'd like to see how that translates to on the court game.
