MIAMI -- Rookie forward Michael Beasley did not finish his first practice with the Miami Heat summer league team Wednesday after being struck in the chest by a teammate's elbow.

The Heat said Beasley, the No.2 overall pick in last week's NBA Draft, was being taken for evaluation and had no further details on the extent of the injury.

Beasley and the Heat are scheduled to begin play in the Orlando summer league on Monday.

It does make you wonder if the other guys just wanted to give him a "Welcome to the NBA" greeting. The Heat, after all, need this kid to grow up very fast.

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said Beasley was struck in the chest during a one-on-one defensive drill. Beasley, the 6-8 forward from Kansas State and the second overall pick in last week's NBA draft, had been matched up during the drill with Anthony Washington, a 6-10 center from Portland State.

''It was a physical practice -- one of our defensive practices -- and he took a shot to the chest,'' Spoelstra said. ``Really, it was just precautionary. He probably could have finished if it was the regular season, but we wanted to be safe.''

I bet you Washington was scared out of his mind for the rest of practice...waiting for Spo to ask him to leave
