James Posey will opt out of his contract with the Celtics on Monday, making him an unrestricted free agent.

Both Posey and his agent, Mark Bartlestein, have said they want to re-sign with the Celtics, although Danny Ainge is making no promises. "I'd hate to say whether or not we will be able to. We'll see what happens." New Orleans and the Lakers are expected to make a solid run at the defensive and 3-point specialist. Posey has a knack for winning championships, and while his heart remains in Boston, he's head will probably follow the money trail.

Man it would be sad to see him go.

Ainge's comments make me a little nervous. Hopefully they can resign him.

If LA gets him that would be huge for them.

If LA makes a run...it effectively means that the C's HAVE to sign him. I think they should do it under any (normal) circumstances. Now is not the time to worry about $$, they are selling enough tickets and jerseys to cover all of that.

At least he wants to re-sign. I think they have the cap room to keep him around.

Danny has to resign Posey. He's irreplaceable. There isn't another guy in the NBA that can replace him and I hope Danny knows it.

 that we are able to resign him. And I want it done quickly too.

You guys really need to resign Posey he's a solid defender and has a great 3 point shot. I think he's a little underrated though. I was one of those sparks of the bench you guys had

The Celtics have got to be selling SO MUCH gear and merch that paying Posey 6 mill a year cannot be that big of hit. Same with House.

The Celtics have got to be selling SO MUCH gear and merch that paying Posey 6 mill a year cannot be that big of hit. Same with House.

Why don't people realize it not as easy as that. The Celtics are over the cap, which means all they got is the MLE (Mid Level Exception: which is about 6 million a year and can be 5 years in length, they can offer this once every year when they are over the cap, it can be split up and used to sign more than one guy.)
They also got the BAE (I believe 2 years, and 2 mil, can't be split between players.)
Then there is the vets min, can be offered to as many player as you want, 1 million a season, but sure on the years.

So its not as simple as just handing him 6 million dollars. I didn't want him to opt out so we could make a signing with the MLE now that he has opted out we are going to have to give it to him. I hope that helps...

For the NBA champion Celtics, free agency begins today with James Posey as the primary focus. Most other personnel matters will be handled after Posey's situation is settled. One move was made last night when the franchise failed to make Tony Allen a qualifying offer, thus making the guard an unrestricted free agent, according to his agent, Mike Higgins. The arrival of draft picks J.R. Giddens and Bill Walker definitely hurt Allen's chances to return to Boston.

The last thing Boston needs is to have Posey in LA
