Comparison that popped into my head today at work.

Who would you rather have?

Just checking now, they've both posted 118 OPS+ in their careers (with Ichiro's OBVIOUSLY being a longer career).

That said, Ichiro is 34, Fukudome is 31. Who do you want right now? For the next 5 years?

I think you have to grant 'career' to Ichiro, but if you feel otherwise, feel free to say so.

Ichiro because he's more proven. Ichiro has done it for a while now, while Fukudome has only done it for half a season. I know they both did it in Japan, but:
1. Japan and MLB are completely different.
2. I don't watch Japanese baseball, so they never proved anything to me when they played in Japan.

Ichiro, easily.

Ichiro without a doubt. He has numbers that Fukudome will never have.

That's probably the way I'm thinking, too.

Ichiro over the next 5 years will (Likely) decline. Fukodome is still just 31, so over the next 5 years, he's not going to be far out of his prime.

Over their careers, of course, you must take Ichiro.

I love Ichiro, hes a great player. I love Fukudome too so far cuz im a cubs fan....I would take ichiro now and I hope that Fuku can put up the kind of numers ichiro has

I'll take Fukudome. He does more things that I like. Both have shown they can hit in the .300 range (Ichiro being the much higher average hitter) but Fukudome walks a lot more. I like his approach at the plate more. And the answer for who you want five years from now is obviously Fukudome.

Ichiro, even though he's older than Fukudome. He has been one of the best players since he came into the league.

COMEON! Ichiro has done more then Fukudome would ever dream of doing.

Huh? How are they not similar?

I'm taking Fukudome. .400 OBP FTW.

It's funny... I didn't think this would be a legit comp. when we signed Fuku but his power hasn't really showed yet. He could potentially be a 900 OPS guy, unlike Ichiro. He tries to pull a lot of pitches outside and I think if he started going with them he'd increase his slg a bit.

Depends on what you value.

Ichiro is the ideal leadoff hitter in MLB & a GG OF'er every year. You can't beat that, unless you get 40+ HR's & 125+ RBI's every year, without hurting your team defensively.

What numbers are those?

SB's?

The ideal leadoff hitter either walks a little more or slugs higher

I think you've confused Grady Sizemore and Ichiro Suzuki again.

Fukudome SUCKS!
He swings like Ichiro but can't hit like him.

I think you've confused Grady Sizemore and Ichiro Suzuki again.

Sizemore strikes out an awful lot for a leadoff hitter though. And considering how much more Sizemore walks/hits for power, there isn't that much of a difference in the OPS+ (126 vs. 117 career)

Humongo

And as for the comparison, I'll take Ichiro. Ichiro's just now got his AVG up over .300, and that's likely to go up. He's been hitting better lately, and Fukudome's slipped a little bit. Right now the difference in OPS+ is only 6 points in Fuku's favor, so I don't think it'll be that long before Ichiro overtakes him.

Fukudome is a very good ballplayer, but I have to say Ichiro because he has been a hit freak since coming to the MLB in '01. He has proven to be one of the best contact hitters in the game, if not the best.

Ichiro is an amazing player. Hits like a machine. Gets on base as much as anyone in the league. One of the fastest players and best base stealers. Gold Glove winning OF. Cannon of an arm.

The one thing he lacks is some power, but he doesn't need power to be a successful player.
