Matt Kemp is good but Jay Bruce has all the potential in the world.

Bruce could completely flake out and Kemp could rise to the occasion...

But in that .0001% chance, I'd say Bruce.

so you're gonna judge bruce on 70 AB??? even he said it when asked to explain his hot start, Bruce said simply "Sample size."

And to this point, Kemp is putting up a rather pedestrian career. He's going to have to show more before anyone outside of LA is going to take him as seriously as Bruce.

Not to mention that Bruce is 2 years younger and put up a better minor league line as well. Kemp hit .310/.358/.518 to Bruce's .308/.366/.555

Bruce is scary...his minor league numbers are off the charts not even to mention his hot start as Kirel just said

Kemp is very good, and is only going to get better.
And although Bruce has a small sample size from which we can see him, I still have to go with Bruce.

You look at Minor League stats, Major League success, and most importantly, projection. While there is a chance that Kemp will have the better career, that's not very likely.

Pretty simple.

Bruce will be the better player.

Kemp hasn't even proved he can be better than average so far in his Major League career. And from a corner OF position, that's not anything special.

how has he not proven to be better than average?

.293 batting average/ better than average.

12 stolen bases/ much better than average

39 RBI's/ well over average

he may not end up as good as Jay Bruce but there is no way he is average:mad:

BA isn't even important, and RBI's have no purpose in the discussion.

His OPS+ this year is 101, which is almost exactly average. And for a RF (correct?) that's nothing special. Last year he was 125 however he was a bench player most of the season I believe.

Bruce is off to a start of 156 which ain't too shabby :)

Kemp still has plenty of time to make something of himself, but so far he hasn't done much. There should be optimism. I hope he's a bust :p

Well, lets not go that far. The Dodgers haven't exactly given him the loosest rope to hang off of, as they haven't really been good to the young players the past couple of years.

We have to give Kemp some actual full time duties before we can label him a bust, or anything else.

I don't understand how you can say that, even if your benefitting from your spot in the lineup, you are still bringing that runner home, even if you fly out to center 150 times, that's all you needed to do. You got your job done, and that's hard to do at the major league level.
As for average I'm not even going to go there, we'll just say when Chipper hits .380 this season it isn't that important.

I didn't label him a bust. That was just a sidenote from a Giants fan, hoping any Dodger player fails :)

I'm not saying it's not important to knock runners in. But it has very little indication of a player's value and talent.

And sure, if you hit .380 you're probably pretty good. But Chipper is also gets on base a lot and without looking I already know his SLG% is extremely high.

But saying that he's hitting .297 doesn't mean anything when his OBP his .336 and SLG is.433

Chipper: .400/.493/.638

That's the important thing about Chipper.

You could hit .400 with no XBH or walks, and that wouldn't be anything special (Although it'd be ridiculous).

As a reds fan, I have to disagree with you, I would rather have a healthy every day playing Jeff Keppinger (.300+BA, not much power) right now over Adam Dunn (.230BA, power and walks). It all depends on what you need as a team, the Reds right now need anyone and everyone who can hit the ball and alot less homerun or nothing guys.

Sure, you can take Keppinger and his 112 OPS+ and I'll take Dunn's 134 :)

dude, please don't become Gnat fans with Lincecum. There's already another thread comparing Kemp (and other young Dodger ballplayers) with some D-Back kids. All that really matters is that while the Reds got their *** kicked this season, the Dodgers made it to the NLCS. By luck (cough, Manny, cough) or by virtue, Matty played much further into the post-season than Jay. Jay can win all the MVP awards he wants...it's all about rings.

Which neither still have :p

His comparison wasn't even accurate, considering Lincecum is a Cy Young candidate and Bailey is still trying to get adjusted to the MLB.

Kemp is a bit more accustomed to the MLB, but at least Bruce has had significant time in the Majors.

Matt Kemp is a funny guy. I talked to him during batting practice, and he told me he was James Loney. He wouldn't throw me a ball though. He kept throwing them to dodger fans (who dropped them).
