Royals optioned first baseman-designated hitter Billy Butler to Triple-A Omaha.

Butler can point out that Alex Gordon was hitting .185 at this time a year ago and got to keep his job. At .263/.330/.339, Butler wasn't nearly that bad. However, the 22-year-old was doing almost all of his damage against lefties. Versus righties, he's a .263/.313/.355 hitter in 372 at-bats. Butler still has a fantastic long-term outlook, and the odds are good that he'll have considerable value in AL-only leagues after the All-Star break. However, sending him down isn't a bad move. The Royals will give Mark Teahen more time at first and find additional at-bats for Joey Gathright and Ross Gload.

I expect him to be back up within 2 months.

When they continue to flounder (they're currently amidst a 9 or 10 game losing streak) they will decide to go young & bring him back up to get some AB's in the majors to prepare him for the future.

I'm pretty sure he will be up pretty soon. The guy absolutely rakes lefties but he needs to find his power stroke.

Good move. Did the same with Teahen and it really straightened him out. Last year the season was long done by the time we thought about demoting Alex. He also had a breakout series right before they were going to send him down which kept him in the majors.

Butler will be back by the all-star break but they need to get more bats in the lineup and get AB for Teahen and Gathright. Booting Pena to the bench makes real sense though.

he's supposed to be the power hitter in the lineup, and he's a singles hitter. i heard that was more the reason for his being sent down.

Billy Butler went 2-for-4 and hit his second homer for Triple-A Omaha on Saturday.

Butler could be back by the end of the month if he continues to beat up PCL pitching. He's currently at .375/.429/.688 in 32 at-bats.

Billy Butler homered, doubled and walked Thursday for Triple-A Omaha.

With Butler tearing it up since being optioned out and Ross Gload still doing nothing to justify his existance, the Royals need to be seriously thinking about giving the 22-year-old another chance. He's hitting .377/.441/.679 with three homers and just two strikeouts in 53 at-bats.

I think you guys should call him back up within the next two weeks if he continues to hit like this.

Royals recalled designated hitter Billy Butler drom Triple-A Omaha.

Butler was 0-for-12 over his last three games, but he still hit .337/.417/.564 during his month in exile. He'll return as the Royals' primary designated hitter, leaving fewer at-bats for Ross Gload, Miguel Olivo and Joey Gathright.

Good to see him back up, he's going to have to get used to ML pitching sometime.

the kids gonna be a stud, he should undoubtedly be in the bigs, even if he doesnt do the damage he is capable of, the experience will gladly help him.
