View Full Version : Guidelines for Quoting Outside Sources

Recently, your Raptors mods have been noticing an unacceptable number of instances where posters are incorrectly quoting outside sources. This is not simply a stylistic issue- improper quoting and referencing of outside sources is COPYRIGHT VIOLATION. It is extremely important that every poster familiarizes themselves with the proper format for quoting outside sources. The three key steps for quoting an article are:

1.Include the source.

Links are highly preferable. Hyperlinks can be inserted by simply highlighting the words that you want hyperlinked, and clicking on the “Insert hyperlink” button on the tool bar above your post. The picture below shows you how to do this.

2.DO NOT copy an article in its entirety.

This is very important. Take a short excerpt(s) from article as opposed to copying the whole thing. Some posters like to paste the whole article and bold important parts- DO NOT DO THIS. Include each bolded part in its own separate quote. If you feel the whole article is worthy of being shared, then include a short excerpt from the article, and encourage other posters to follow the link you included (see above) to the rest of the article. See the picture below for proper formatting.

3.Wrapping the excerpt in quote tags.

This helps to set the excerpt of the article away from the body of the post, and signifies that the text is being quoted from an outside source. This can be done by highlighting the text you want to be quoted, and then clicking on the “Wrap
tags around the elected text” button, shaped like a speech bubble (below). The final product should look like the quotes included above in this announcement

A workable format that you can use for quoting outside sources is this:

[QUOTE] [Include a short excerpt here that is of most interest to posters,
or best sums up the article] Source:
[Include the title of the source] ([Adress of source])

Hopefully this helps. If you have any questions, post them here.

Happy posting!

Nice job JJF. Thanks.

And btw, to all posters ... this is intended to help make quoting articles easier, not discourage people from posting articles. The more articles we have in here, the better the threads will be.

Excellent. This should add to the overall quality of posts on the Raptors' board and PSD as a whole.

I'm noticing a lot of people using BOLD letters instead of the quotes function when they're quoting.

PLEASE it makes it hard to read your posts when you do this. That's why we have the QUOTE key above the message box. It's to make it easier to read your posts. Some of you are quoting multiple sources and it's almost impossible to tell what you wrote from what you're quoting.

Ever wonder why you don't get a lot of responses to a post like that? It might be because it's too hard to figure out what you're trying to say.

[Include a short excerpt here that is of most interest to posters, or best sums up the article]

Source: [Include the title of the source, and use the hyperlink icon to provide url] ([Adress of source])

This example from JJF is the clearest tutorial I've seen.

Are we allowed to post links to other forums not on psd?
