Hopefully this will be an interesting thread that won't lead to any bickering or arguing.

I created a post similar on the Bulls and Lakers board regarding their respective teams, but I am curious on when most posters began to actually watch the NBA in general.

Also when did you become a fan of the team you like now?

i started when i was four, it was `87. first game i saw was LA against NY (i think). all i really remember back in that game was kareem - the way he shot the ball got stuck in my head and BOOM. LAL Fan for life.

1990. Became a Knicks fan because of their tenacious defense and their grind it out style of play. Getting knocked each and every year by the bulls only added fuel to my fire.
As for my Clippers affection that started when Maggette and Brand, two of my favorite dukies ever, went to LA and I decided to follow them which eventually led to me becoming a fan of the team.

All I Remember is John Paxon Hitting the 3 Pointer :-) So that makes it what? 1993?

I started watching the NBA in 83'. I was 6 years old. The game was between the Bulls and Celtics. I am a red headed Irishman. So who did I pick to root for. The Bulls of course! HAHA. I don't know...I was 6, and I picked a team, and have been a fan ever since, and I am 31 now. Holy crap, that's 25 years of being an NBA fan! I do root for the Celtics though, and the Suns since I am from, and still ive in Phoenix.

1. Bulls
2. Suns
3. Celtics

90-91 Finals: Chicago Bulls 4-1 Los Angeles Lakers

Initially, my favourite player was Magic, but my dad was a Celtics fan, found out about that and bought me a Larry Bird jersey.
Basically, my dad brainwashed me and with the gift convinced me to support the C's, which must have been easy from him, since I was a 10-year old.

Larry Bird became my favourite player and the Celtics my favourite team.

It was either 73 or 74. It was the first year CBS started showing the games. The Bulls played against the Knicks and I just couldn't root for the Knicks so I became a Bulls fan. Like most sports, though, I love the sport more than the team--but I always root for my team.

1990 when I was 5. I used to love Jordan and the Bulls. Then I started watching Shaq in College and because my dad used to own a convenience store, I got free magazines. Then when Shaq came into the league I was REALLY into the NBA!

Just for kicks & giggles I sat down to really think about the best players I've seen since I've been a fan and just decided to rank them 1 through 10. I caution this is not to go off topic nor do I want to debate anyone. I just figured, since I'm one of the older guys here, you'd get a kick out of my top ten all time--with commentary.

Jordan (It's not even close how much further ahead he still is from everyone else)
Bird (In my life still the most clutch player I've ever seen)
Hakeem (He was an all time great 2-guard in a center's body)
Jabbar (Money. Any team with Kareem simply wins titles)
Magic (Maybe the most impactful player the NBA has ever seen--aside from Jordan)
Dr. J (It's no secret. The NBA went after the ABA just to get him)
Tim Duncan (Easily the most underrated player of this generation. He does everything flawlessly, IMO the best player in the game today)
Barkley (6'4" PF and simply better than everyone else around him)
Isiaah Thomas (If Magic revolutionized the PG position, Isaiah definitely modernized it)
Kevin McHale (The best player in NBA history not considered a "main guy" on his team)

Some guys I just felt were overrated: Maravich, Frazier, Walton, Bernard King, Drexler, Stockton, Malone, Gervin, David Robinson, and Scottie Pippen.

The one guy, outside of McHale, who I felt was really, really underrated for his era is Kevin Johnson of Phoenix.

Kevin Johnson of Phoenix.

That man was always fun to watch. It's a shame he went from a 20 PPG guy to a 10 PPG and could only play in 50 games. He was a great finisher and could dunk on everyone

I believe it was a knee injury that ultimately got KJ. Unless I'm romanticizing my memory of him, he was easily on his way to a HOF career.

For those youngins' that didn't get to see him play, enjoy:

Geez, you guys are olddddd

03-04 playoffs

Rockets vs Lakers was my first game
And I had suite tickets (I love companies giving free tickets)
Anyways, I loved Francis at that time. But he got shipped off quickly.

I hated T-mac his first year here, which was his most explosive...
I loved Yao from the 2nd year with T-Mac, and until now, he is my favorite player.
Kobe is my 2nd
and T-mac is my third.

Since then ive only missed a handful of Sixers games.

but ill always love the early 2000's

-Iverson Winning the MVP, innovating the game of basketball.
-Shaq and Kobe Dynasty
-The Kings team with Webber, Bibby, Stoj, Vlade, Christie, Hedo, BJack, GWallace
-Vince and T Mac on the Raptors, and T-macs starry jersey in Orlando.
-Yao causing waves in Houston.

haha oh yeah, and that Clippers "Young Gunnaz" team with

Corey Maggete

I started watching in 1993. I had a friend that was a HUGE college basketball fan and he kept telling me about this team from Michigan that called themselves the Fab 5. I didn't know crap about basketball but I found them entertaining. Little did I know I was watching one of the greatest college basketball stories of all time (even though they choked). That lead me to focus on the Mavs who had just drafted Jim Jackson. I followed them all though the crap years of the 90's.

I never knew rap was any good. The thing the NBA needs to do is stop calling so many fouls. The offensive player has too much of an advantage in the NBA. People say it increases scoring, and that may be true. But all it does is increase free throws, but free throws are boring unless it is at the end of a close game.

Since then I began following the NBA, I remember clipping out the standings from the newspaper for some strange reason that escapes me right now.

I didnt become obsessed with the game until recently like 1998 but Ive been along for the ride for awhile.
