Who is the best rapper of all time?

2pac?
Biggie?
Maybe someone different?

I've heard people go as far as saying that Jay-Z and Eminem.

Lil' Wayne will be in the top 5 rising female country singers before he's a top 5 rapper.

How T.I.'s name got brought up in this thread is mind boggling. T.I. is a horrible rapper, with marginal talent both flow-wise and lyrically. If you listen to him live, you might want to bring some ear plugs with you. Worst live performer ever. He almost was booed off stage, and did actually leave before he was supposed to because the crowd started to throw stuff at him. No joke.

1a. Tupac: The content of his songs will never be matched. The most passion of any rapper ever (which is why some people say he's overrated, that all he was was passion, but he had the skill to boot)
1b. Nas: His skills will never be matched
3. KRS One/Rakim: They are nearly the same to me. Their music isn't as catchy, but they were amazing talents. They were hip-hop, most everyone today uses hip-hop.
5. Notorious B.I.G: Lacked the passion of Tupac, but had godly flow
6. Jay-Z: A bit played out, but Reasonable Doubt, and his other early stuff was amazing
7. Scarface: The only Southern rapper that can be called great
8. Wu-Tang: Specifically Raekwon and Method Man and Ghostface...but all of them
9. NWA: Specifically Ice Cube
10. Big Pun
11. Eminem: Just had to give him props. He had Tupac-esque passion.

And I love Lil Wayne with a passion, and I'd love to get him up there, but his stuff is so played out, and his rhymes are all the same now. Depending on Tha Carter 3, he has to wait a bit. But I love Wayne, and listen to him over a lot of those guys, but talent-wise, and syllabus-wise, he isn't quite there.

eminem used to be good (marshall mathers lp) but now he sucks (especially encore) he tries to be too funny now rather than having the right mix of funny and raw like marshall mathers lp. encore cd was one of the most disappointing cds ever.

and im not hating on jay-z, i think hes top 10 all time, but with all this talk bout lil wayne stealing rhymes, listen to the song hes a biter by cam'ron. if you go through a lot of rappers that has been around a long time your bound to find some lines from these guys influences cause its what they were influenced by.

It's a subjective art form. The only way I can explain it to you is to suggest listening to more hip hop, because obviously you dont get enough of it.

Yeah and 2pac is probably the most overrated all time, with Eminem right up there. Kanye and Weezy getting up there too, as is Snoop Dog. That'd most likely be my top 5.

He wasn't considered the best rapper when he was alive, he shoudn't be after it. His death glorified his music, and it's revisionist history to say he was one of the best of all time. He was a very very good rapper, but he's gotten overrated (more than any other rapper) just like all the other dead rappers. If Nas died after Illmatic he'd have been widely considered to be the best of all time, if the 18th Letter died after Don't Sweat the Technique he'd be the GOAT no questions about it (and Ra is pretty much there already).

What the l? Who said Pac wasn't the best when he was alive? A ton of ppl thought of him as the greatest when he was alive. As a matter of fact, probably even more than today, because when he was alive, he was in the middle of hip-hop's biggest beef and this was before Nas, Jay, Em, or any of the others.

I just don't buy that whole thing about death glorifying his music. Does that mean Biggie is overrated as well? If u want 2 talk about overrated MC's, let's talk about Rakim, KRS-One, Jay-Z, and Snoop Dogg.

Rakim IS overrated. The most overrated of all-time by far IMO. If ur gonna use Pac's death as an excuse to his brilliance on the mic, I'm going to use Rakim's engineering as his "GOAT pass." That's the way I roll.

Rakim has influenced any rapper worth a damn...

He is right, Pac is overrated. He is good, but he isn't as good as people make him out to be. Average lyrics with almost no flow. Everyone makes him out to be the best ever, when in reality, he isn't even top 5.

I wouldnt put Pac in the top 5 or even 10, but overrated? I never really heard syncopated rhymes before him and although its been done to death, that growl on Ja Rule and DMX was done justice by Pac.

I did, and so did everybody else. The day before he died it wen't 1. BIG 2. Nas 3. 2pac and that's only because alot of guys had fallen off a bit or were just underrated like Scarface and Andre 3000.

so you are saying EVERYBODY thought the list was 1. big 2. nas and 3. Pac?

everyone in the whole world before September 1996 thought that was the list? I was fairly young at the time of his music and death, but i remember all the hype about him when he was alive, i do remember MANY people calling him the best rapper while he was alive

im sure his death made him somewhat of a bigger artist than ever before, but its not like he was a nobody in the 90s either

GO1 makes really mediocre arguments. He said BIG and Nas were more popular artists than Pac was at the time of his existence. BIG and Nas were just coming into the game when Pac was already dropping albums. Pac is twice the MC as Rakim btw.

BTW, as far as bigger names at the time 2pac died:

Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Snoop Dog, Nas, BIG, the Fugees, LL Cool J were all more known in 96.

But the mainstream don't matter, all these guys were considered better before 2pac died:

1. BIG
2. Nas
3. Common
4. Ice Cube
5. CL Smooth
6. Scarface
7. Andre 3000
8. GZA
9. Raekwon
10. Ghostface
11. Method Man
12. Redman

Don't that all like it's some super list, I didn't put alot of thinking into the ranking, but at the time most if not all of these rappers were considered better than 2pac. Andre 3000 just dropped a double classic, Scarface with The Diary, Common just ****ed up the underground, CL Smooth with double classics, GZA and Raekwon putting out the albums of the year, Method still off the Tical high and Redman with another classic in Muddy Waters. Admittingly, these weren't the most popular in the mainstream, but that really doesn't matter. Also, KRS put out a dope record in 93 and 95, people still considered him miles ahead of the average rapper even though he was way past his prime. There's a few more I could put on is all I'm saying.

Pac was not the best lyricist. The thing is Pac made hits. Pac made songs that weren't corny that you can still bump today. His emotion, his raw desire and his voice that commanded attention. That's what made him different from other artist back then and even today. It's not all about who's the best lyricist.

He never had to make a "my name is" or a "Hard knock life" type of song.

Off of his 1st album Id have to say that goes to Kanye, which I know is going to be unpopular, but he did have some solid stuff. Now he re-uses to much of his stuff.

And Dre is a horrible emcee. He tries to emulate too much, NWA days he straight ripped from Ice Cube, Chronic days from Snoop, and 2001 days you could hear a bit of Jay-Z in there. Good producer though, even if it is ghost written.

I don't really like these threads. I know when ever I think of the best I just say what I like so its all opinionated, and that's no good if your trying to figure the best.

Right now Nas is really growing on me I am starting to see why here at PSD everyone likes him so much.

So I would probably say Nas. Sorry Sooper you probably think I am crazy, but I can listen to him at night when I am chilling out, and I can listen to him playing ball. Just all around good.

I agree a lot, people who don't know hip-hop listen to him. I know Lil Wayne fans that play his CDs front to back constantly. I like him less for his rapping and more for his message.

Pretty much everybody that was underrated 5 years ago is overrated now. Guys used to tell people that like AZ and Jadakiss are underrated, and then they'd go and tell more people that they are underrated, now everybody says they're underrated. That makes them overrated now.

Nas is my favorite single artist of all time. Bone Thugs is my favorite group.

But here are the top 5 that i'm listening to the most right now (obviously not the best though):

Bone Thugs
Nas
Eazy-E
Aesop Rock
Atmosphere / Felt

I like to throw in The GZA in any discussion for greatest rappers. He may not be the best but its debatable. His rhymes are amazing, plus he didnt produce "crap rap" that has dominated the airwaves for the past 10+yrs

Pretty much said it there. I hate Jay-Z since 98? Since he never really had any meaningful music in fact he was the one that started this rap bling-bling and money BS that killed rap. I wouldnt consider Big Pun top-10. GZA the genius is top-5 IMO. The best lyricist ever, guy was amazing.

I don't think Pun is the greatest either, but him and Fat Joe are the same? Why? Because they're fat and hispanic?

Fat Joe will never, ever, ever, approach Pun lyrically. Joe is garbage, Pun, while not being the GOAT, is still a great mc. RIP.

For sure. There is no comparison between Pun and Joe. That is an insult to Puns name. I don't think Pun is the best, but he is one of the better MCs to rap.

I think im gonna have to go Big L as the best. Ebonics sold it for me. Ebonics, IMO, is probably the most talented song i've heard. To sing a whole song about ebonics, and keep the same flow the whole time is just insane.

Their both overrated because both have only 1 classic album. Guys like Guru, Black Thought, GZA, Redman, O.C., and Pharoahe Monch have been in the game for a long time and have multiple classics. And all are better than Pun and Big L imo.

Everyone of those rappers was a part of a much greater album than Big L's debut. Lifestyles was poorly produced and the rhyming wasn't always up to par, you cant say that about a true classic like the ones all those other guys made.
