Yo!!! Dont forget we may not be done recruiting because Brandon Rush may go to Illinois for 2005. We just do not know though what the hell is taking so long for him to make a decision.

Weber has been bashed time and time again for not being a very good recruiter, but he's quietly put together a very good class for next season, and few seasons down the road. Illinois will be tough, probably not better than last season but they will be stronger in the post w/Randle, and Marcus Arnold for a full season, and Augustine as well. Dee will be back, so there will be a ball handler, and the young kids will contribute right away since they won't be very deep.

yea I've heard a little bit about almost all the rcruits maybe about half of them actually and I think they are going to be a tremendous team. Even though they lost deron williams that does not mean anything with these recruits on the line.

Yeah, he was, but I think they can afford to lose him since the post play may actually be the strength of this team now. Augustine, and Marcus Arnold should be a pretty solid starting duo in the post, and then we have some very good post players that will be young, but also be able to contribute right away off the bench. This team will probably have a much different style of play, and definately not as guard-oriented w/Dee being the best one left. Also, Brian Randle could be very good for us this season as well. Athletic wing player that plays like a guard, but is 6-8. Not many teams have a guy like that.

i think randle is the key to our season. it will be interesting to see how he plays after not playing at all last year due to that injury. i always liked his game, because he can really do it all. he can drive, he's got a pretty good shot, and he plays some great defense. i'm really interested in seeing marcus arnold. if he plays like some people say he can, we could have a better post game this year than last year. i think powell is great, but he wasn't really a post up guy, and with arnold it seems like he likes to bang down low. overall i think we have a pretty solid team, but it's not nearly as good as last years team.

Dee will have to come back pretty strong too w/a broken foot so 2 of our likely starters will be recovering from injury, and it will be interesting to see how they do now. What I will miss about Powell is that he did all the dirty work down low, got all the boards, played about 5-6 inches bigger than he actually was, and something like that is tough to replace. Arnold is a good player though. I use to live in Normal, and saw him play at ISU, and he was one of their best players, if not their best. He's got some decent post moves, but will get a lot of boards, and compliment Augustine well.

yeah i'm not sure what we can expect from dee. i'm hopin he comes back as strong as he was last year but it is hard to tell. we really need dee to pick up the scoring load. as far as arnold goes i really don't know anything about him, but if he is anything like you explain him he will be a huge help. i thought last year we didn't have very good rebounding, and that really hurt us. hopefully he can bring us some scoring too, because we are going to need it with luther and deron gone.

dont get me wrong here i love the illini but all the guys weber had were recruited by self. now since most of those guys have graduated and the new class that they have will be playing we'll see how they could play.i think this year is gonna be a rebuilding type team w/ just augistine and brown coming back as starters. lets hope that they could be competitive.

That was never really my point. My point was that Weber has recruited his own players this season, and done very well for a school that was in the National Championship. He's capitalized on that success which is what he should do. He's a better coach than Self, but Self is a better recruiter. Heck, we would have had Charlie Villanueva at Illinois if Self stayed, and that may have been the difference in the NC game.

Weber has some solid players coming back like Brian Randle, and a good transfer from ISU. That right there is not gonna replace what they had last season, and I don't expect it to. I do expect them to be good though, and be a high seed in the NCAA tourney again, not number 1 overall of course. I don't know if they will even be good enough to win the Big Ten again, but I won't put it past them. MSU is the fav there no doubt, and a lot of people will sleep on Illinois, but they will be good next season, and for seasons after b/c Weber has recruited some solid players to help now, and in the future.

Things would have been a lot different if you would have had Villanueva & Self last year.......but not necessarily for the better.

Yeah, I'm not so sure Illinois would even get close to the NCAA title game w/Self at the helm. He's a very good recruiter, and what better place to do that at than Kansas? As coach though, he's just average. KU last season should have been a final four team at least w/the talent and experience they had, but they lost in the first round to Bucknell.

Reminded me of the season after Illinois went to the Elite 8 w/guys like Frank Williams, Corey Bradford, etc. They were ranked no. 2 in the preseason, and were a major dissapointment all year, and barely won a share of the Big Ten title.

i'm also glad that self isn't coaching the illini anymore. i liked the way that the offense has run with the three headed monster that was dee, deron and luther. but i'm curious to see how weber adjusts to life without luther and deron and how the inside presence will be withouth powell. but i'm looking forward to seeing the young, inexperienced guys get a chance to get out there and play. as long as we can beat MSU i'll be happy!

So the last thing I read was that Illinois will be having a solid team this year despite losing the players they lost they can still truely contend in the playoffs with the potential that their coach has seen in practices so far.

I think its very important to get these players for 2007;
Derrick Rose http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=75&p=8&c=1&nid=1349804
Eric Gordon http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=75&p=8&c=1&nid=1151828
Kosta Koufos http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=75&p=8&c=1&nid=1945118

Illinois has offered all three of them.

I think they have 4 scholarships availiable for 2007...so there is one open.

Also:
Durrell Summers http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=75&p=8&c=1&nid=1573088
O.J. Mayo http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=75&p=8&c=1&nid=832843

They would be ok to get if Rose or Gordon don't decide to come, but I think they will.

It would be nice to see for all the illinois fans that all of these 3 decide to come. It also depends on their performances of this year as well so it might be too early for them to decide although thats not true for all cases.

Updated the list...There is talk about this Leon Freeman fellow for 2006, but Illinois hasn't offered him because his academics are a problem. But he said following a game last week that he will be attending Illinois. So even though nothing official , it looks likely he could take the final scholarship for 2006.

We also got Mike Tisdale for the 2007 class. He is a 7 footer from Springfield, Illinois. The only problem is he only weighs 200 pounds, so he is going to have to put some major weight on. I just hope he isn't like Nick Smith because that will suck. Anyways he is a four star recruit.

I think its very important to get these players for 2007;
Derrick Rose http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=75&p=8&c=1&nid=1349804
Eric Gordon http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=75&p=8&c=1&nid=1151828
Kosta Koufos http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=75&p=8&c=1&nid=1945118

Illinois has offered all three of them.

I think they have 4 scholarships availiable for 2007...so there is one open.

Also:
Durrell Summers http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=75&p=8&c=1&nid=1573088
O.J. Mayo http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=75&p=8&c=1&nid=832843

They would be ok to get if Rose or Gordon don't decide to come, but I think they will.
No offense, but don't count on seeing OJ Mayo going to Illinois. Personally I would expect him to choose from Ohio State, Cincinnatti, Duke, UNC, Kentucky, & possibly Louisville. He's originally from northern KY, so that may factor in to where he decides to go.

or maybe he can be a garnett type player. he's a skinny bastard too!!

no way OJ come to Illinois. i'd bet money on that.

OSU is gonna be great, probably F4 capable in a couple years.

He could be a garnett type player, but my guess is he'll turn out to be the same as Nick Smith. A skinny bastard that can shoot the ball, and has no inside game, and is weak as hell.

I'm not expecting him either, that's why I narrowed the list just to those that have been offered to. I'm hoping for Rose in 2007. That Leon Freeman in 2006 who was said to have commited to Illinois, which was false, looks pretty good (4 star recruit). But they have one more scholarship for 2006 (maybe Freeman), and one more for 2007 (hopefully Gordon).

Tisdale lives near me, not down the block but like 30 min away so I see the basketball games he plays in on newscasts. He looks like he has a decent shot, but he looked kind of shaky inside. But he is young so he could get muscular.

Gordon did commit verbally to the Illini, however, word is that IU is giving him a lot to think about and if we (Indiiana) can get Deandre Jordan to come next year, and possibly McCamey, Gordon may be heading to Bloomington.

EG was on ESPN 950:

The most interesting part of the interview was when EG was asked about having any interest in IU although he is committed to Illinois. EG basically said that he was still committed to Illinois, but he has been hearing and learning a lot about IU and that he is talking about things with his parents.

The 6-foot-3 shooting guard is down near Atlanta this week participating in the adidas Superstar Camp and that presented us the opportunity to get the latest on that front yesterday from the top 10 ranked prospect.

Here is the partial transcript of a short Q&A session yesterday with Gordon:

Q: There are rumors floating around about your recruitment. Are you still solid with Illinois?

GORDON: Yeah, I am still solid with Illinois, but I am thinking about Indiana too. I am giving them a look. At this point, nothing has changed.

Q: Do you feel like with the coaching change at Indiana that you have to give them some consideration?

GORDON: I have looked at them for a long time because they are an in-state school. They have a good tradition and Coach Sampson is a good guy, so I think because he is the new coach there that I should give them a look.

Q: Do you still plan to sign in November or would you think about waiting now?

GORDON: I am not sure. I have to talk to my parents about what I am going to do when that time comes.

GO HOOSIERS!

so do you want us to be happy that we just lost arguably the #1 player in the country or do you want us to be mad cuz we "stole" other schools recruits???

im pretty sure you would be mad if whatever team u root for lost a top rated player to a rival.

No you should be happy you got the recruits and you should be mad that you lost. But dont get overly dramatic about how EG is such a horrible person, or Sampson did something dirty, it happens and what I was pointing out is you, UI, have done similar things so it makes no sense to attack them. Its not like EG denied anything, he openly stated he was looking at the new situation at IU and was going to give Sampson a fair chance. It wasnt like you didnt know he was looking into switching. IU has lost all its instate recruits in the last few years (Carney, McRoberts, Oden, Conley, even going back to Randolph, Gardner, and Stewart). This is all because of Mike Davis, with MD out IU is a completely different team than the one EG didnt want to go to. It is sad that EG's high school had to hire body guards because he was receiving death threats from UI fans.

im not attacking gordon or IU, if it's anyone i should be attacking it would have to be Bruce Weber for not following through. and i know indiana has lost many in-state recruits in the past few years but so has illinois. a few examples: derrick rose, john scheyer, sean dockery, andre iguodala, shannon brown, shuan livingston, dwyane wade, julian wright, sharon collins and the list goes on and on.

The whole attacking EG/IU part was not meant for you, just at the "average fan" who has constantly blasted Sampson/EG for the whole situation. Like I said they never did anything dirty, he openly told everyone that with the coaching change he wanted to check out the new situation. I just feel its sad that high school kids receives death threats just because they change from a "verbal" commitment which really means absolutely nothing other than they really like what they have seen at that school or like what they have been told from their current coach during their junior year (when the kid is only 16/17). I just found it funny/sad that some (not you in particular) people wish horrible things to a 18 year kid just because he switched schools, especially when the same school that is complaining did the same sort of thing just a few months before in the other major college sport. Its not only happened with this situation but with other high school athletes from different areas of the country, and in different sports its is sad that our society has lowered itself to that level IMO.

Dee will be back, so there will be a ball handler, and the young kids will contribute right away since they won't be very deep.

well Weber was bashed becase what has he done with the teams that he has recruited since we went to the championship (which he didnt recruit those players)

Too bad that won't be til 2010.

2009 should be a solid class though, Bertrand is a 4 star recruit and in-state prospect. Along w/the other two kids from Illinois that Weber recruited.

I will say he's doing a better job of hanging onto some of the Illinois talent, but he let some big ones slip through his fingers for next season (Michael Dunigan, Matthew Humphrey).

Illinois would've been loaded next year w/those two coming in.

At least Weber got the UK transfer or else next years team would've dropped off the map. They probably still will though w/losing Pruitt and Randle.

Yeah, next year Illinois will probably suck again, but from 09 on they should be very, very good.

Bertrand and Griffey are both studs, DJ Richardson and Brandon Paul are also very good. That's just the 09 class. His 2010 class is looking awesome as well with Jereme Richmond and Crandall Head.

If Weber can hang onto all these kids and build around the 2009 and 2010 classes they could be an amazing team in a few years.

The best thing about this is that all of these players are the top players in Illinois (w/the exception of Griffey who's from MO).

I disagree, that they will suck again next year. Maybe not have the same results as what we've been use to outside of this year but we have Jamar Smith coming back, and Alex Legion will be able to play the 2nd semester and he showed potential with the little time he had at UK. Also Tisdale will be beefed up a little more so these young players will have gone through a year of the Grind um out Big 10 season. Also McCammey has shown signs of being a pretty good PG, so his sophmore year he could be good. I havent seen many games actually only 1 the IU vs UI game on CBS cause of the damn BTN, but from what ive read on the boards we should have a solid team next year.

They're losing their 2 best players (Randle, Pruitt), so I'm not sure how they can be good?

It's wishful thinking to believe they're going to be anything more than average next year. Sure some of the young guys will grow, Smith comes back, Legion will play, but there's a ton of inexperience in the post (Tisdale, Davis, Cole) and not really any great players to lean on. Best case is an NIT berth for them, and even that may be hoping for too much IMO. In 2009 they should be very, very good though and in 2010 they should be a scary team in the Big Ten, maybe nationally.

It is sad when we have to say that Brian Randle is one of our best players, he was to inconsistant and as seen in games earlier this year. Then we have Pruitt who can't make a free throw to save his life. I think next year they will be decent and could maybe sneak into the NCAA's, but we shall see it depends how are out they are when Legion comes in and the development of Demetri McCammey.

I guess anything is possible. I do believe Weber is still a very good coach, he just doesn't have the players this year and his 2 best players didn't show up much at all this season (Randle, Pruitt).

It all depends on how some of the young guys grow and if Legion can be the stud he was supposed to be coming out of high school.

I'm playing Brandon Paul on friday, I'll give you guys the scouting report when I'm back, haha.

Seriously though, I've played with and against Paul before, this summer, there may not have been another recruit who helped his stock so much, Paul was tearing it up at many JG (Joy of the Game) tournaments in Deerfield (for all you Illinoians).

Jereme Richmond is another guy I've played against, probably the best player I've been on a court with. The guy can do what he wants, when he wants. He is a legit 6'7'', his shooting is drastically underrated, great finisher in traffic, good defender.

These two guys alone get me really excited for the future of Illini basketball.

And yeah, Richmond's shoe size is like 18 or something, maybe 21, I forgot the exact size, but it is in that range, which is insane considering I'm a sophomore myself, I'm 6'2'' and my shoe size is 13, haha.

Quinton Watkins:[2007 Recruit] Didn't receive clearance from the NCAA Clearinghouse. So he never on the team and now is at SD State. I was wondering why he never played.

Charles Jackson: I think he doesn't play for the team anymore since he joined the football squad.

Yeah, I don't think Smith is coming back either.

Illinois backcourt is loaded anyway, so there isn't much need for him. It's the post that needs some big time help.

According to an article on illinois.scout.com from August of 07 it says Jamar Smith will be playing if he has good behavior.

I can't find any links but I am sure Jamar Smith is coming back next season. Bruce said he needs to sit out this year but will be back.

Yea I think I should help Tisdale gain about 50 lb b/c that dude is skinny...He might have potential but as of right now all he reminds me of is Nick Smith.

I can't wait until next season and then every season after that. Hopefully I'll get some good tickets, I wanna do Orange Krush but I don't think I can raise the money.

Ya sorry i didnt pay attention to this thread i used too post a lot more but havent really followed much recruiting. Um J. Smith should be back this upcoming year since he sat out this past year. I cant wait for Alex Legion though to play for us with McCamey. He will be really good, plus to see Tisdale mature should be something that could be fun.

I've read that Tisdale gained like 20 or 30 pounds [I'm not sure which], but that should help him alot.

And I didn't know whether Jamar was coming back or not. We'll see how that turns out.

It is going to be tough for Jamar, especially on the road. But he has been shooting lights over the past few months.

Really can't wait to see this team. Completely opposite from last year. Last year had big time inside presence, now not so much. Last year, nearly no 3 point shooting. We Jamar, Legion, McCamey, and Meacham who all are capable of knocking down an open 3.

The player i'm most excited to see is Dominique Keller, a JUCO forward from Lee College in Texas. About 6'8(?) and 230 and can rebound and score. Sounds like he is much needed for this years Illini.

I like basketball and Illinois hasn't had a good recruit in years. We need to get some recruiting going quickly!!!!

Patience. One more year until the 09 class arrives on campus.

Yup. Only had one or two real good games. He didn't really fit with the illini this past year and never learned the offense.

any reason why?

STLCards002

I haven't heard any specific reasons, but I think it's probably b/c of playing time.

Also, we can most likely say bye-bye to Jamar [probably forever]. There was a warrant out for his arrest [he turned himself in] b/c he was at Fu Bar and the cops came and saw him there. He's 21, but the problem is that his probabtion doesn't allow him to drink.

The officer smelled alcohol on his breathe.

I just heard about the Jamar Smith thing and wow that guy is not the smartest person in the world. Why would he even be at a bar? I mean i know he could go there and stuff and he should have fun but to come on your on probation and you do something stupid like that.....anyways good news for the Illini they got a committent from Meyers Leonard a 4 star C for the 2010 Class. Bruce Weber is just loading up on the talent.

Bruce Weber has announced Jamar Smith is no longer a part of the Illini basketball team saying he violated their verbal agreement.

No suprise there...
I don't really care anyway, we have enough guards and I think it will just give them a chance to get more PT.

Its a shame when the Jamar stuff came out because it greatly overshadowed the big-time commitment of Meyers Leonard. He's a 6'10 forward and a great addition to the already outstanding 2010 class.

Yup...def a big signing. Hopefully I'll go out my senior year with an NCAA basketball championship.
