I think it goes without saying it's really about Martin Vs. Mauer. Statistically, I would take Mauer easily but with his injury troubles and Martin's durability, if I was a GM I'd take Martin.

One Nut Kruk
07-20-2007, 08:50 AM
McCann is a really good young catcher, but he's not in the same class as Martin and Mauer.

Between Mauer and Martin....I'll take Martin because he's Canadian :worthy:

McJoe

if i was picking any catcher for my team id take pudge cause he comes to a team and they r automatically a contender...even florida that year

but if i was taking any catcher itd be between mccann and martin...

martin: awesome, good hitter, good speed, great defense, just awesome

mccann: great hitter, decent defensively

mauer gets injured all the time...the twins should move him to 2nd base or something like that or else hes just one of those career DHs

as it was said b4 martinez is a DH with no other position

not sure y posada is on the list

pudge is old therefore not who id pick to make a championship team past this season

i take martin as u can prolly tell from my descriptions

brandonwarne52
07-20-2007, 10:11 AM
Mauer gets injured all the time? Since when is twice 'all the time'? He didn't spend a single day in 2005 or 2006 on the disabled list.

Martin. He's a great hitter, can hit for average, power, steals bases, great defensive catcher as well. Mauer is a close second, McCann, Ivan, Martinez, Posada, and my other choice is Paulie LoDuca! haha

You guys are just using stats, the most important part of a catcher is working well with the pitching.
And everyone knows, if you wanna win, you want Pudge right?

4 years? He's really only been in the bigs full time for 2 1/2 years while Martin has been in the league for 1 1/2 years. Martin has more pop and can run the bases and has a higher OPS. It's not like it's Mauer by a landslide.

How's that whole "best catcher = martin" poll going? Isn't Mauer the best?

First we have to look at the ratio of Dodger fans vs Twin fans here and we should get our answer.

bagwell368
06-01-2009, 10:49 AM
to use the Boston accent... Mahtin? Who the hell but 14 year olds would vote for Mahtin?

Martin is 26 years old with a career 106 OPS+, 56 steals.. nice (oops 23 CS, not that special). Martin has 0 career MVP votes. An EQA of .285 (real good hitters start up around .300), and a FRAA (fielding runs saved over average at that position) of 14 in 456 games at catcher (slightly above average)

Mauer has 134 OPS+, 30 SB, with only 6 CS. Mauer is 26 years old - younger then Martin, has two silver sluggers, a GG, a 4th and a 6th in MVP voting. Mauer has a .317 EQA. Mauer has a FRAA of 35 in 519 games, which is well above average.

So, Mauer is a vastly superior hitter to Martin (in fact in baseball history only Piazza is a better hitter then Mauer so far), a better fielder then Martin, and is younger then Martin but has 120 games more stats/experience then Martin.

Only a fan could vote for Martin, highly biased ones.

He's just a defensive catcher.

Yadi may be better defensively, but he hit over .300 last year and he's so good defensively he stops more runs than most of those "offensive" catchers can produce.
