Padres optioned LHP Royce Ring to Triple-A Portland.

Ring will get a permanent spot at some point, but there's no room for him now while everyone is healthy.
Padres purchaed the contract of RHP Justin Germano from Triple-A Portland.

When Germano faces the Braves tonight, it will be his first appearance for the Padres since 2004. He had a 1.69 ERA in five starts for Portland.

    Amen.

By the way, I'm sure most of you know by now but I was surprised to see that it's not in this thread... Cesar Carillo has to have (has had?) Tommy John surgery and is going to be out of commission for all of this year. Not good news.

yea not good but i the long run it will be ok for hte next few years we will be fine on pitching so while it would be great to have him we will be ok and when he comes back we will be that much better

Carrillo was examined at Scripps Clinic Wednesday, and doctors diagnosed a sprained ulnar collateral ligament sprain. Reconstructive surgery was recommended, although, as is routine, Carrillo will get a second opinion. If Carrillo does have Tommy John surgery, he will likely be out for nine months to a year. Even then, he might not make a start until later in the 2008 season. Continue to track his progress, but it looks as though his season is lost.

Yeah that sucks. What's with all of our top draft picks of recent years being busts/injury-prone?

wait wait wait hold the phone. look what wikipedia has to say:

On May 19th Carrillo joined the Class-AAA Portland Beavers. However, he was only able to pitch 2.2 innings because of tightness in his right throwing elbow. Carrillo was sent to the Padre team specialist in San Diego and was told that he would need to rehab the elbow for roughly a month. Carrillo, as well as the Padre organization, were pleased with this as opposed to Carrillo being forced to have surgery. He is currently rehabbing in Phoenix, Arizona.
That's good. Not that he'll be used much (if at all) in the big leagues this year, but always nice to see a guy not have to miss a whole year.

Now I see the Union Tribune has reported this past Thursday that he will have Tommy John surgery after all, scheduled for this Tuesday. I don't know what to believe anymore with this.

I saw the same thing... but then I realized that this news is either from a year ago, or it's a report from a week into the future.

^ lol yeah good point. well, he's having it then. That acutally makes me have more concerns about him since he has had similar pain in his elbow at the beginning of 2 seasons in a row. That's not good.

Pitching prospect Drew Miller will have his elbow examined by San Diego team doctors.

Miller is the second Padres' pitching prospect (the other being Cesar Carrillo) in the past month who has had elbow issues. The Padres are hopeful that he won't need season-ending surgery, but they are bringing him in just to make sure the injury isn't too serious.
