Padres Acquire Eddie Kunz For Allan Dykstra

The Mets acquired first baseman Allan Dykstra from the Padres for righty Eddie Kunz in a swap of former first-round picks, tweets Darren Smith of XX 1090.

Dykstra, 24 in May, hit .241/.372/.438 in 469 plate appearances at High-A last year. He was drafted 23rd overall by the Padres in '08. Two years ago, Baseball America ranked him eighth among Padres prospects, praising his "plus-plus raw power and plate discipline" while expressing concern about a hip ailment and his lack of athleticism. Dykstra did not crack BA's top 30 Padres prospects '10 or '11. He's one of Paul DePodesta's guys, tweets Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus.

Kunz, 25 in April, posted a 5.34 ERA, 5.1 K/9, 5.5 BB/9, and 0.6 HR/9 in 111 1/3 Double-A innings last year, including 12 starts. Drafted 42nd overall in 2007 as a supplemental pick for the loss of Roberto Hernandez, Kunz last made the Mets' top 30 prospects one year ago at the #25 spot. According to BA, Kunz's stock plummeted as his fastball and slider regressed and he struggled with his command and conditioning.

The San Diego Padres recalled left-hander Wade LeBlanc on Sunday and sent right-hander Samuel Deduno and outfielder Cedric Hunter to Tucson. LeBlanc was Tucson's opening day pitcher this season.

Tucson Padres are 2-2 after a 12-2 loss in Colorado Springs to the Sky Sox. Padres and Sky Sox ended up splitting the 4 games over the weekend.

Tucson will play Salt Lake in about 20 minutes from now in Utah. Tucson Padres home opener is Friday night, also against Salt Lake. I'll be there!

Four San Diego Padres Prospects named to AFL Fall Stars Game

San Diego, CA- Four San Diego Padres prospects have been selected to play alongside some of the best prospects in the game in Saturday’s Arizona Fall League Fall Stars Game. You can watch the game Saturday at 5 p.m. on the MLB Network.

According to MLB.com, last years AFL Fall Stars Game had 23 players who played this season in the Major Leagues.

Here are the four Padres that have been selected to play in the AFL Fall Stars Game.

    Jace Peterson:

Peterson began the season in Triple-A El Paso and was called up to the Padres multiple times last season. Peterson has always been a solid hitter in the minor leagues, but struggled at the plate during his time with the Padres last season. Padres are hoping Peterson can improve his consistency at the plate, as he provides solid defense at shortstop, second and third base, but he will need to improve his if he wants to make the Padres opening day roster next season.

    Hunter Renfroe:

Renfroe like Trea Truner is expected to be playing in Petco Park in the next few years. Renfroe was drafted by the Padres with the 13th overall pick in the 2013 Draft and had an impressive season. Renfroe played in the Futures All Star Game and batted .267 with 21 homeruns and 75 RBI’s between High-A Lake Elsinore and Double A San Antonio.

    Tayron Guerrero:

Tayron Guerrero, 23, has been with the Padres since signing with the team out of Colombia as a non-drafted free agent in 2009. Guerrero was dominant out of the bullpen with a 1.45 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 49.2 innings between Low-A Fort Wayne and High-A Lake Elsinore.

Guerrero is 6’7 with a fastball that consistently hits 100 mph, but has spent the past four seasons in Rookie Ball and Low-Single A developing his command before breaking out this season. If Guerrero can continue to polish command of his fastball and develop decent off-speed, he could be a future reliever or closer in the Padres bullpen.

    Burch Smith:

Burch Smith was out for most of last season due to a forearm strain. Smith made his Major League debut in 2013 and has an electric fastball, but lacks solid off-speed pitches to be a Major League starter. Smith still has the potential to be a solid reliever for the Padres next season

Left-hander Eric Stults has chosen to become a free agent after the Padres outrighted him to Triple-A, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports (Twitter link). Stults was designated for assignment by the Padres last week.

As Jeff Sanders of the Union-Tribune recently explained, the Padres’ decision to designate Stults was largely based on financial reasons (the $4.6MM he’d earn through the arbitration process, as projected by MLBTR’s Matt Swartz) rather than the southpaw’s performance as a Padre. Stults has been a reliable innings-eater since joining the team in May 2012, posting a 3.87 ERA and 2.71 K/BB rate over 472 IP. The advanced metrics, however, rank Stults as a below-average performer at pitcher-friendly Petco Park, so the Friars felt they could afford to let Stults go in lieu of their other pitching depth.

Stults, who turns 35 next month, has a career 4.12 ERA over 635 2/3 IP with the Padres, White Sox, Rockies and Dodgers over eight Major League seasons.

According to the transactions page on Yankees.com the New York Yankees have signed minor league second baseman Jonathan Galvez to a minor league deal. Galvez was most recently in the San Diego Padres organization and posted a .280/.354/.449 slash with 10 home runs and 52 RBI in Triple-A this season.

Galvez's career minor league line in seven seasons is .280/.366/.427/.793 with 54 home runs, 331 RBI, 144 doubles, 17 triples, and 114 stolen bases (37 as his career high in a season) in 2,309 minor league at bats. Can you say the next Yangervis Solarte?
