    Dave Fizdale's shoddy leadership style

    https://www.thescore.com/nba/news/1539708

"David Fizdale was fired by the Memphis Grizzlies just 19 games into his second season as the team's head coach, thanks in large part to a well-chronicled rift with star center Marc Gasol.

However, Gasol was reportedly far from the only Grizzlies player Fizdale alienated during his brief tenure. Fizdale took the Memphis job after spending years competing for titles with LeBron James and Dwyane Wade as a Miami Heat assistant coach. He came aboard with a mandate to dismantle the team's "Grit 'n' Grind" culture and remodel the franchise in the Heat's image, a Grizzlies source told Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News.

"... He didn't care who Marc was and he didn't care how the offense was, he didn't care about the style we were playing. It was going to be about - 'This is a new era. The Memphis stuff is over. That Grit 'n' Grind is done,'" the source told Bondy. "Then he turns around and says, 'We're going to do it the Miami Way. When we were in Miami, we did this, when we were in Miami, we did that.'

"The players didn't respect that. If you're going to talk about Miami, we should be able to talk about Memphis."

He also reportedly deepened the rift with Gasol and the rest of the team after his first season at the helm by pushing management to get rid of veterans Zach Randolph and Tony Allen - two longtime Grizzlies who were deeply embedded in the fabric of the team's culture.

"He wanted his own locker room," the source said of Fizdale. "And he basically convinced management to get rid of Zach, to get rid of Tony Allen."

As for his frosty relationship with Gasol, things apparently got particularly uncomfortable in the locker room after an early-season loss. According to Bondy's source, Fizdale went around the room asking his players if they believed the team could win a championship.

"No," Gasol reportedly said. "We don't have the right leader."

Fizdale's comeback, according to the source: "I get it, you want Gregg Popovich, and I want LeBron James."

Despite having his first NBA head coaching job cut short after just 107 total games, Fizdale landed on his feet in short order, snagging the New York Knicks gig not six months after being ousted from Memphis."

Seeing those quotes about that exchange between Fiz and Marc is ridiculous. No wonder he was fired.

Sometimes you have the right idea but just mess up executing that idea. He seems pretty bright and decent from hearing him on the jump. I think he will do fine.

You mean dinosaur Zach Randolph & Tony Allen who won't be in the league next year? I don't see the problem, what's wrong with trying to emulate one of the best cultures in the league in the Heat culture? What it boiled down to was Gasol being a baby and threatening it's me or him and ultimately they chose Marc who has been that Grizzlies franchise since traded to them. It's not Fizdale's fault that Grizzlies FO handed out one of the worst contracts ever to Parsons along with Conleys inflated contract. Fizdale's highly respected around the league and Grizz just didn't give him much of an opportunity bc of their FO issues/ small market team issues

He'll be fine in New York, they just have to be patient

Marc is one of he most soft spoken, patient, mild mannered, low maintenanace and high sportsman guy. It must of took a lot of piss him off. I do not know what really happened so I'll leave it at that. Hard to know which report one can trust.

    Both parties were to blame.

But management destroyed any shot whatsoever at a good team with the Parsons contact.

The team was old, slow, and offensively deficient, and you brought in a coach from a flex offense. What were they really expecting? The flex taxes body movement and ball handling out all of its players. Not surprising he wanted players that could thrive in that system.

You have Gasol who wants pick and roll and post touches and is old and set in his ways.

Nobody great coach-wise is running after that Memphis job.

Anyone paying attention to the Grizzlies organization shuffle and dance this season knows that this was a BS reason they used to get rid of Fizzdale. Was there some ruffling of feathers? Sure, it happens in all teams, but it's obvious this wasn't the reason Fizzdale was fired.

Gasol was putting up great numbers with Fizzdale there, so not sure how his game wasn't being catered to. He's shot himself in the foot. Now he's stuck with a garbage coach, garbage team and dysfunctional FO. If he want's to finish his career with any relevance he should ask management to trade him.

Grizzlies fan here ...Im glad we fire Fiz the whole Miami did it this way thing got so old so fast.

I loved the Fiz hire at first but when he fail to develop young players and start it blame them for it I knew it was over.

He is great with the media but he sucks in almost everything else.

Fizdale asked Memphis players if they believed they can win a chip.
Marc Gasol said no. When asked why, he said they don't have the leadership. Fizdale took it as a shot towards him as he's the coach and would obviously be looked at as the leader overall.
Fizdale said, "I know you want Popovich but I want LeBron James."

Memphis screwed up by paying Conley, IMO. And then they went ahead to get Parsons? My God, they set their franchise back a few years. It's not Fiz or Gasol's fault but just poor GM work.

Bro have you been in a coma for 20 years? The Knicks haven't been a winning culture in a while. And I don't think Fizdale is the antidote. I think it was pretty stupid to come in and say you're overhauling the Griz culture, especially when it was a successful one. They were the toughest team in the league for a while and it worked for them and the fans liked it. I dunno, just never been impressed with the guy or the carousel in general that they have in New York.

He's talking about NY City which represents many other sports besides the knicks. I agree Knicks have been a joke for most of last 2 decades.

He will last 2 years tops.He will fool the fans and media with great interviews/press conferences ...

But as soon things don't go his way he will blame everyone except himself. No player is save around him not someone like Marc Gasol.

Also the Grizz front office is not the best best but stop using that as an excuse for his failures.

Fizdale won't do anything in NY. Probably fired after 3 seasons.
