Broncos decide to bring back Vance Joseph for his second season

Four coaches in seven seasons for the Broncos, not sure how someone is going to like going to work for Elway after that.

Stability and consistency at quarterback were among the primary issues for the Broncos this season, as quarterback Trevor Siemian, Paxton Lynch and Brock Osweiler all started games behind center. The Broncos' eight-game losing streak from Oct. 15 to Dec. 3 was their longest since 1967; six of those losses were by double digits and four by at least 20 points.

But the team's most prominent players, including captains Von Miller and Aqib Talib, Siemian, cornerback Chris Harris Jr. and linebacker Brandon Marshall, had consistently backed Joseph during the team's struggles, which included an eight-game losing streak.

If they decide to fire him, Joseph, 45, would become the first non-interim coach in franchise history to last only one season. Should the Broncos part ways with Joseph, general manager John Elway will conduct his fourth head coach search in his seven seasons on the job.

Joseph, the team's first African-American head coach, replaced Gary Kubiak a year ago when Kubiak stepped away from coaching because of health concerns.

The new coach would be the 4th head coach in 7 years. But only one of the previous three would have been fired.

    Fox quit
    Kubiak retired
    VJ fired

And Kubiak has been taken care of after retiring for health reasons. Rumored to be getting a nice FO gig.

So not sure how that really affects what a coach thinks about taking the job.

Candidates probably care more about an aging defense, a team that quits in week 3 and no viable starting QBs on the current roster.

i know he technically wasn't fired, but "mutually parting ways" or whatever they call it is the nice way of firing someone.

Yup. Because the team completely mailed it in during the playoff game. I'm not saying that Elway didn't do his part to push him out the door, but the decision was on Fox. As a matter of fact, Fox had his friend Jay Glazer put out the initial report that the Broncos could part ways with Fox if they lost the playoff game. People close to Elway claim he hadn't even thought of getting rid of Fox when that report came out.

Then the Broncos lay an egg in the playoffs, and almost immediately after JDR and Fox are both gone.

Elway and Fox were butting heads because Elway was not happy with how conservative Fox was and Fox wasn't happy that the GM was on his case.

Oh and also, I don't think the Broncos are firing Joseph.... Elway wants two years in a row of a top 5 pick.

Joseph is returning for another year, I think the Broncos made the best choice here. I'm not a fan of firing coaches after just one year.

Vance Joseph will return as the Denver Broncos' head coach for the 2018 season, team president John Elway announced Monday.

Elway tweeted that he and Joseph talked Monday morning and that the Broncos "believe in Vance as our head coach."

Joseph, 45, guided the Broncos to a 5-11 record and a last-place finish in the AFC West in his first season as an NFL head coach.

"I think it's great [that Joseph is returning]," quarterback Trevor Siemian said. "He's got the locker room. He's got the respect of the guys. Times like this, it's easy to point fingers. The thing is, nobody in here has done that, and that's a credit to Coach Joseph and how he steered this thing."
