I think that those people saying "OMG it's the best Star Wars movie ever" are suffering new toy syndrome, in time I suspect this movie is not going to be looked on anywhere near as favourably.
I certainly didn't walk away with the same feel good factor as TFA, if anything I was more confused as all the movie seemed to do was destroy a lot of what was set up in TFA with little to no explanation.
It actually felt like this movie was Rian's attempt to try and semi reboot the trilogy because he undid so much from TFA and it just happened so often that it kind of lost meaning. Here are some examples ..... Kylo's mask was destroyed and never to be seen again within the first 10 minutes of the movie, no real explanation at all about Snoke's backstory nor how he turned Kylo Ren and then before we get any answers Kylo turns on him and kills him with no real explanation as to why it happened. Rey's backstory was an integral part of the build up in TFA and then once again in another nothing scene Kylo said that her parents were nobodies who sold her off (yet in episode 7 wasn't Lor San Tekka in the flashback scene with Rey as a child when she was dropped off?) yet now her backstory is completely irrelevant. The movie then concludes with Luke dying in yet another poorly done understated scene.
So to summarise
Luke, Phasma, Snoke are gone
Snoke's background and connecting to Kylo ............... were never explained
An explanation on Rey's backstory, parents and why she is so strong in the force .................. never explained and her lineage was very poorly handled.
So now that Rian has abruptly closed off the story arcs of Snoke, Luke and Rey's lineage (very poorly) can anyone explain to me what exactly is supposed to draw us in and make us excited to see in episode 9?
The more I am thinking about it the more bitterly disappointed I am with episode 8
