Desmond Jennings went 4-for-7 in a 16-inning victory for low Single-A Columbus on Sunday.
Jennings, a big-time speedster taken in the 10th round last year, is hitting .313/.387/.418 in 67 at-bats. He's still learning how to play baseball, but that he already seems to have a pretty good idea of what he's doing at the plate is a nice sign. The Rays feel he could turn into a regular center fielder someday.rotoworld.comSeth McClung and Chad Orvella combined to pitch five hitless innings and strike out six in relief for Triple-A Durham on Sunday.
McClung was perfect in his two innings, giving him a 2.38 ERA and to with a 12/7 K/BB ratio in 11 1/3 innings. Orvella walked two, but he faced just one over the minimum in three innings. He has a 3.75 ERA and a 15/5 K/BB ratio in 12 innings. The two are competing to be the next reliever called up by the Rays.
rotoworld.comJeremy Hellickson allowed an unearned run and one hit over six innings Tuesday in his season debut for low Single-A Columbus.
Hellickson, who had a 96/16 K/BB ratio in 77 2/3 IP in the New York-Penn League last year, opened the season on the DL. Time will tell if his future is as a starter or a reliever, but he's one of the top pitching prospects in the deep Tampa Bay farm system.
rotoworld.comReid Brignac went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer and a sac fly Friday for Double-A Montgomery.
Brignac is batting .319/.354/.514 in 72 at-bats. With Ben Zobrist failing to establish himself as the Rays' starting shortstop, Brignac could get a shot before the end of the season. At worst, he should have a chance to compete for the job next spring.
rotoworld.comAndy Sonnanstine allowed one run in seven innings and struck out 11 for Triple-A Durham on Saturday.
Sonnanstine won't be the first starting pitcher called up by the Rays, but it's possible he'll have a little value in AL-only leagues later this year. He's 2-2 with a 2.70 ERA, 21 H and 37/6 K/BB in 30 IP for Durham.

Wade Davis struck out nine in seven scoreless innings Sunday for Single-A Vero Beach.
The Rays have gone slowly with Davis, keeping him in short-season ball for a second year in 2005 and then declining to give him a midseason promotion during a strong 2006 at low Single-A Southwest Michigan. With a 2.15 ERA and a 28/7 K/BB ratio in 29 1/3 innings so far in the FSL, he could put together a case for a June or July arrival in Double-A this year. He projects as a third or fourth starter for the Rays.rotoworld.comDouble-A Montgomery's Fernando Perez suffered a sprained MCL on Sunday and is expected to miss at least 7-10 days.
The speedy Perez is hitting .272/.416/.407 with 10 steals in 81 at-bats for the Biscuits.
Rays prospect Wade Davis threw a seven-inning no-hitter in the second game of a doubleheader Friday for Single-A Vero Beach.
Davis also had a seven-inning no-hitter for low Single-A Southwest Michigan last season. Tonight's performance follows an outing Sunday in which he fanned nine in seven scoreless innings. The 21-year-old is one of the Rays' top prospects.rotoworld.comGreg Norton had a double and two RBI Friday in his first game for Double-A Montgomery.
Norton, who is returning from knee surgery, will spend 7-10 days in the minors. He figures to take some time away from Carlos Pena when he's activated from the DL. Jorge Cantu could be sent back down to open up a roster spot.
Davis should be amazing, can't wait until the Rays have an amazing pitching staff.
Devil Rays recalled RHP Tim Corcoran from Triple-A Durham.
Steve Andrade and Seth McClung had the best ERAs in Durham's pen, but the Rays bypassed them for Corcoran and Chad Orvella. Corcoran went 5-9 with a 4.38 ERA in 16 starts and five relief appearances for the Rays last season. He'll be used in middle relief.rotoworld.comDevil Rays recalled RHP Chad Orvella from Triple-A Durham.
Orvella should get a chance to help set up Al Reyes, as Brian Stokes is struggling to get the job done. He remains a sleeper candidate for saves in the second half of the year.
rotoworld.comDevil Rays optioned shortstop Ben Zobrist to Triple-A Durham.
Even with expectations kept pretty modest, Zobrist has been a huge disappointment offensively as a major leaguer. This is a guy who had OBPs of .438, .415, .475, .434 and .400 in his five stops in the minors. After joining Tampa Bay, he managed just a .260 OBP in 183 at-bats last year and he was down to an absurd .159 this year. He didn't walk once in 62 at-bats. In the minors, he received two base on balls every three games. In the majors, he's walked 10 times in 70 games. Durham is obviously where he belongs until he figures out that his current approach isn't what got him an opportunity in the first place. Josh Wilson should be an upgrade behind Brendan Harris.
i sm new here and isnt Ben Zobrist really good........ well at least a good prospect
Not really, he came over in the Huff trade. We have a future all-star SS in Reid Brignac at AAA.
