Cubs must feel really good about their shot at Harper because it seems like they should be in the Stanton sweepstakes.

I don't think so. It seems they want to reset desperately. It's not that they mind being over the threshold, it's just that they reduce the penalty substantially if they can reset just once. This winter is the time for them to do that.

Morosi says that the Marlins need a reality check on their expectations on a Stanton return.

Yanks don't have a lot of other years to potentially reset their penalty like this year. Especially with big extensions in the future coming.

Shed Ellsbury at all costs and stay cheap this year, and then go huge next year (can you imagine Harper, Machado, Judge, and Sanchez in one lineup?) and then blow past it the next 10 years

Heyward is still on the roster. Ideally a year from now he has built upon his quality September enough to have another team interested in eating three quarters of his contract. A league average OPS of 750, combined with elite defense, and hopefully some team is willing to eat around 70 million or so of the remaining 100+ million deal.

As long as Heyward is a Cub Stanton and Harper wont be on their roster.

Either have another team eat the whole contract and get a disappointing return. Or eat 50+ million and get a package built around Weaver or Reyes. Considering how much money Miami lost in 2017, combined with their awful fan base likely continuing not to support the team, I think option one makes the most sense for owners looking to stop a team from bleeding money.

I wonder how much of that is Jeter not wanting to be seen as being taken advantage of in the first deal

Personally, I think it comes from Jeter not knowing much about the fair market value of the game and sport. He sees an MVP and may not fully relate to why his contract is a deterrent for other clubs.
