Leivo signed to en extension... why would he do that? no way Babs was playing him another 30 games this year. He could go to FA and actually play hockey next year.

I don't see how he wouldn't. Gets paid almost a million bucks to practice with the richest team in the NHL. First class flights, etc. and get some games in here and there

There is no guarantee a team would have offered him this deal. 1-way for Leivo? a guy who hasn't played a half season in the NHL or even AHL in two years? He likely would have received a 2-way deal for less than 925k if he sticks in the NHL. The top AHL scorer of the last two (maybe 3 years) only got 2 years, 1.75m per

I'm sure Leivo would love to be playing, but deep down players that are unproven and not highly drafted are always at risk for going to a team only to find out there aren't NHL players. Babcock said this earlier. Holland and Corrado had issues and left. Both have split time in the AHL/NHL this year because both got 2-way contracts. Holland got a 2-year deal worth $675k (300k in the AHL) and Corrado got a 1-year deal worth $650k (200k).

I think this re-sign sends a message that there is an understanding that they like him and think he will be in the lineup next year when JVR and Leo leave

Just read an interesting take about the Leivo deal. Maybe it's a trade precursor? There was a reported big offer made for Leivo (big for a 13th forward i guess) but the Leafs declined it earlier in the season. The rumoured team was Montreal but i feel it was Edmonton. Anyway, the extension could be the assurance that the team trading for him doesn't send an asset to us only for Leivo to get injured or not play and become a UFA only to sign back with us. It's a long-shot but it's a possibility
