So what's wrong with Aroldis Chapman?

I am surprised there wasn't a thread or discussion on this yet, but Chapman, who signed a massive FA deal to return to the Yankees as closer this off-season, was removed from the closer role after a stretch where he's struggled in both save and non-save situation. Joe Girardi said the move out of the closer role is to work on location issues, and he has not named a replacement- though Dellin Betances got the save today.

    So what's wrong with Chapman?

    He's a thrower, not a pitcher.

Overuse (as in, they rode his arm hard because they knew they wouldn't bring him back) or something else?

Say what you want about " Joe Maddon " Facts are the Cubs won a World Series and New York got a quality player in return. Could care less about what Joe Maddon did. If you really think that short of time had any impact on his control then you really don't understand pitching. It's exactly what others have said "he's a thrower, NOT a pitcher. It's not the first time he's had control issues and won't be the last.

Yeah if you're a Cubs fan of course you dont care lol. He helped break a 108 year curse. OTOH, if you're a Yankee fan, Chapman's overuse because of Maddon, could have potentially injured a guy who has been a dominant closer since he was inserted into the role. Its even a bigger deal because the Yankees gave him 86 million dollars to close.

There's just too much volatility in RP to give them large contracts, even the dominant ones.

He's in a slump. Happened to Betances for a couple weeks at the end of June/early July too. He was AWFUL and now nobody remembers.

Cubs blew him out last offseason and his fastball lost some luster which lead to it being fast yet straight as a string...not a recipe for success.

I'm not surprised in the slightest...I honestly thought he would've had shoulder surgery by now.

he is a closer... closers are always going to be hit or miss from years to years.

His average FB velocity has dropped a bit. But he is still routinely 100+ mph. The change is contact rates (he is league avg forr relievers) and a higher percentage of pitches in the zone - so, no, control is not really the issue.

Again...... Maddon's use of Chapman really had nothing to do with his control issues, he's had those thoughout his career. Funny how quickly people forget. He almost blew it quite a few times for the Cubs as well, the proof is there. The Yankees didn't have to resign him and again got a quality player for basically nothing. It just leads back to what lots of people have said here " he's a thrower, not a pitcher. " Always has been, always will be.

My assumption is that at least part of his "issues" this year had to be related to the Cubs pitching the **** out of him last year, especially in the playoffs.
