I figured it was time for a new discussion thread. Besides we have lineups today

    Black Team
    Cole Figueroa (L) 2B
    Adam Frazier (L) CF
    Matt Joyce (L) LF
    Willy Garcia RF
    Josh Bell (S) 1B
    Elias Diaz C
    Dan Gamache (L) 3B
    Gift Ngoepe SS
    Juan Diaz (S) DH

Pitchers: Jameson Taillon, Steven Brault, Chad Kuhl

    Gold Team
    Alen Hanson (S) 2B
    Danny Ortiz (L) CF
    Jake Goebbert (L) LF
    Jason Rogers 1B
    Ed Easley C
    Max Moroff (S) 3B
    Pedro Florimon (S) SS
    Harold Ramirez RF
    Juan Diaz (S) DH

Pitchers: Tyler Glasnow, John Holdzkom, Trevor Williams

For the record yes Juan Diaz is DH'ing for both teams. I don't get it either but it is what it is.

Grapefruit league action today. For the record this is probably the last lineup you'll get from me for Spring Training.

    Harrison, 2B
    Cervelli, C
    Rogers, DH
    Morse, 1B
    Mercer, SS
    Joyce, LF
    Garcia, RF
    Figueroa, 3B
    Ortiz, CF

Lobstein will be the starting pitcher.

I don't want to read too much into it but it seems the Pirates are giving Figueroa a nice long look and both Hurdle and Huntington have spoken fairly highly of him. He has also been taking infield drills with the four guys guaranteed to make the roster if healthy, Harrison, Kang, Mercer and Rodriguez. Figueroa has a little bit of offensive upside so I would be quite pleased if he made the team over Florimon.

I doubt this is what it will end up looking like but here is my guess at the Pirates Opening Day 25 man roster.

    C: Francisco Cervelli
    1B: John Jaso
    2B: Josh Harrison
    3B: Jung-Ho Kang
    SS: Jordy Mercer
    LF: Starling Marte
    CF: Andrew McCutchen
    RF: Gregory Polanco

    C: Chris Stewart
    1B: Mike Morse
    IF: Cole Figueroa
    OF: Matt Joyce
    U: Sean Rodriguez

    LR: Juan Nicasio
    MR: Neftali Feliz
    MR: Jared Hughes
    MR: Eric O'Flaherty
    SU: Arquimedes Caminero
    SU: Tony Watson
    CL: Mark Melancon

With the exception of health related questions I think the three guys in red are the only real questions.

Pirates have signed David Freese to a 1 year, 3 million dollar contract. He will be the starting 3B to begin the year (until Kang returns) and then shift into a reserve 1B/3B role.

I really like this signing and it gives the infield some much needed depth.

Agreed pi like his bat if 1b isn't going well to start he can play there instead of Morse and he can play 3rd to give Kang and mercer rest (slide Kang to ss)

It sounds as if Freese is going to take over as the RH half of the 1B platoon when Kang gets healthy.

This makes Morse really redundant and the only logical trade I can think of is sending Morse to the Astros for Scott Feldman. Feldman is making 8 million this year and doesn't seem to have a rotation spot and the Astros could use Morse as a compliment to Singleton to begin the year and possibly hide Reed from lefties later in the year.

With the Freese signing and confirmation that Kang will not be ready I'm going to offer a new guess to the Opening Day roster.

    C: Francisco Cervelli
    1B: John Jaso
    2B: Josh Harrison
    3B: David Freese
    SS: Jordy Mercer
    LF: Starling Marte
    CF: Andrew McCutchen
    RF: Gregory Polanco

    C: Chris Stewart
    1B: Mike Morse
    IF: Cole Figueroa
    OF: Jason Rogers
    U: Sean Rodriguez

    LR: Juan Nicasio
    MR: Neftali Feliz
    MR: Jared Hughes
    MR: Eric O'Flaherty
    SU: Arquimedes Caminero
    SU: Tony Watson
    CL: Mark Melancon

Freese replaces Kang on the roster and Rogers replaces Joyce due to him being optionable once Kang returns.

Well Matt Joyce has officially made the Pirates roster. It makes sense as the bench needed a left handed bat and an outfielder but I'm not quite sure how this will all shake out once Kang is healthy.

Luebke and Lobstein appear to have made the Opening Day roster.

Nicasio will be in the rotaation. This all means the roster looks roughly like

    Francisco Cervelli
    John Jaso
    Josh Harrison
    David Freese
    Jordy Mercer
    Starling Marte
    Andrew McCutchen
    Gregory Polanco

    Chris Stewart
    Michael Morse
    Sean Rodriguez
    Matt Joyce
    Cole Figueroa/Pedro Florimon/Jason Rogers

    Francisco Liriano
    Jon Niese
    Juan Nicasio
    Jeff Locke
    Gerrit Cole

    Ryan Vogelsong
    Kyle Lobstein
    Arquimedes Caminero
    Cory Luebke
    Neftali Feliz
    Tony Watson
    Mark Melancon

Looks like I forgot to make an Opening Day thread and really don't have time now. I'll make a discussion thread on Monday.
