Bartolo Colon is scheduled to pitch Sunday for the New York Mets when they square off against the Los Angeles Dodgers, and there's an outside chance that this outing could be his last for the team.
As Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports, Colon was placed on revocable waivers Saturday, noting that the Los Angeles Angels might be interested in Colon, but cautioning that they'd be the last team to get a shot at claiming the pitcher.
Adam Rubin of ESPN New York explains the move: "If Colon is claimed, the Mets can pull him back and be unable to trade him, work out a trade with the claiming team, or dump the $11 million contract for 2015 on the claiming club. There may be a fair chance Colon clears waivers because of that contract dump potential. If Colon clears, the Mets are free to deal him to any club for the remainder of the month."
Should Colon shine on Sunday, especially given the tragedy of the recent death of his mother, it could well motivate a contending team to decide they want to add him to their roster for the stretch run.
