Why don't GM's/Coaches put the Best Player Available?

I've been watching preseason and it's clear that

    Cousins is out playing RG3
    Bortles is out playing Heene
    McGloin is out playing Schaub
Vick is even out playing Smith

Is it a pride thing??? I personally want McGloin over Schaub being a Raider fan...

You can't bench RGIII, there's too much invested, and the game I watched Cousins was terrible.

Bortles will take that job soon enough. They hedged their bets early so people wouldn't try and forced them to start him.

No idea about OAK so I will say nothing but that staff doesn't seem to like McGloin a ton.

The last one is easy, Vick doesn't win you the SB. So who cares? Win 9 instead of 7? For what? You have to try and see if Geno is your guy or not. Not win a couple more games.

BB is trying to get his best DBs on the field. We don't have much next to McCourty at S so two of our corners are getting some looks there. He likes positional flexibility.

Because it's preseason and backups KILL backup defenses. It's why Pittsburgh had two backups with 130+ QB ratings, another with a 115 QB rating in preseason and Big Ben had a 80 a few years ago. No, he isn't 4th string there.

It's why Tarvaris Jackson having a 137 QB rating in pre-season last year (best across the entire league) wasn't enough to get Russell Wilson on the bench and ruin their season based on how well Jackson does against guys that are packing groceries and driving beer trucks now.

I'd like to see McGloin too, but unless he beats out Schaub in practice, he probably isn't winning that job.

So you are impressed by the backups doing well against a teams backups.

Cousins is not in the same league as RG3 talent wise.

I've been watching preseason and its clear that you're not watching preseason. Geno looked very good in the only game with any semblance of a scheme and gameplan and all his work was vs the 1s

I'd find it hard to believe guys that have a locked in spot are going 110% in ga!es that don't matter. For backup qbs, I'm sure its the opposite and they're putting all they have into it.

I couldn't disagree with you more.

I think part of what makes a guy with a locked in spot have a locked in spot is desire, competitiveness, heart, and motor. While this isn't always true, I think its true more often then its not.

Geno has been better than Vick, pretty visibly.

Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, and Colin Kaepernick walk into a bar... To watch Russell Wilson win the Super Bowl.

Yeah, Geno looks like a solid starter right now and Vick looks old. He's exactly like his normal self, just aged...flashes of brilliance with some frustrating things thrown in there. But now the flashes of brilliance aren't as special. Vick might not be any faster than Geno right now, who people forget runs a sub 4.6 40.
