    Jeter and Wagner

Their seems to be controversy of which of the two is a better hitter cause they both managed to get the same amount of hits, until recently when Jeter bypassed him. They seem to forget that Wagner attained his hits when the teams at that time only played 144 games total. ..which means he got those hits faster and in less playing games than Jeter. So I say no disrespect to Jeter, but Wagner definitely has the edge in my book.

    Controversy isn't the correct word.

Let's just say anyone who thinks Jeter is even close to as good a hitter as Wagner is...wrong.

Total hits is a terrible way to measure who is a better hitter.

What he said, that's like saying Pete Rose is a better hitter than Babe Ruth or Ted Williams. That would be insane.

Wagner is easily the better hitter but the OP makes no sense. Jeter reached the hits milestone in 89 less games than Wagner. So who cares that he plays more games a year? If you want to bring it up at all, it's probably in Jeter's favor because he got those hits playing in games with more fatigue (since theoretically 162 games as opposed to 144 should be an extra toll on your body).

Jeter faced better stuff; he hit in the bullpen era where a hitter might face 3-4 different pitchers per game; more talent throughout the league; integrated era, etc.

I can't simply dismiss these things when comparing hitters from the respective eras.

jeter's an amazing player and one of the top players of all-time but he's not even close right now to Honus Wagner and what he brought to the game.
With the deepest of regrets I am announcing that I will be leaving Pro Sports Daily. No reason in particular but wanted to thank everyone for a great 6 years here. Lots of great discussion and good poll series as well. Also fun re-drafts. Best of luck to you all in the future.

What controversy? You brought this up in the Yankees forum and those who responded pretty much brushed it aside.

I dont care about the stats, you cannot compare Honus Wagner to Derek Jeter. That said, I have been a baseball fan for 30 years now and Jeter is the best player I have ever seen play. If Bonds had half the heart Jeter has he would be #1 but like the Grinch he has no heart.
