Craig to DL; Corey Brown to provide OF depth

Five days after the Cardinals traded Craig to the Red Sox, along with right-hander Joe Kelly, for right-hander John Lackey and minor league lefty Corey Littrell, Craig is heading to the disabled list due to an ankle injury, according to a Red Sox team source. Craig went 1-for-4 with a double in his Sox debut on Friday, but in his final at-bat, he tweaked his ankle while crossing first base while running out a grounder.

In 97 games for the Cardinals this year prior to the trade, the 30-year-old Craig was hitting .237/.291/.346, a significant dropoff from his pre-2014 career line of .306/.358/.492. Craig missed considerable time last year due to a Lisfranc fracture in his foot. On Sunday, Sox manager John Farrell said that the Red Sox were trying to discern if there was any connection between last year’s injury and this one.

With Craig out, outfielder Corey Brown will join the Red Sox to provide outfield depth. The 28-year-old, who signed a minor league deal with the Sox in the offseason, is hitting .226/.294/.452 with 16 homers in 83 games this year in Triple-A Pawtucket. Of his 16 homers, 14 have come against righties. Brown, who can play all three outfield positions, has played 36 big league games in his career, all as a member of the Nationals from 2011-13.

If his foot has been a lingering issue since the world series, I would really just consider shutting him down the rest of the year, its been a wash of a year for him anyways.

It drives me mad that Betts gets no time vs RHP. Absolutely terrible player development, I don't know what the **** they are doing.

Yeah he's not a platoon player he's a 21 year old phenom... Get him consistent reps or send him down. Absolutely ridiculous.

I like Nava as a 4th OF, but Betts should be starting over him at this point. Navas last two months have been good but with a .420 BABIP and very few XBH. He's just getting lucky. He's not the player he was last year. His defense has been good and I like him as a backup, but Betts should be starting.

The Red Sox administered an MRI last weekend and will send Craig to see North Carolina-based specialist Dr. Robert Anderson, who treated his injury last year. But Cherington said those measures are mostly a precaution given Craig’s recent history and added that the club’s “long-term prognosis is very good” that the 30-year-old outfielder will return to the lineup this season.

“Because of what he went through last year, we’re trying to be extra cautious,” Cherington said. “There’s no concern about whether he’s going to be OK to play and feel good and be completely healthy. It’s just a question of making sure that we’re not putting him in a position where he’s compromised and maybe is at risk of doing something else by making up for what’s going on in his foot. We just want to make sure we get it right.”

He's eligible to come back the middle of next week. Not sure whether they'll bring him back immediately or wait until the rosters expand.

I would think they wouldn't wait, since they haven't hit this year. I think they have scored 675 runs to date this year thats awful.

    Thank you K.G. JR!!!

What? 675 runs at this time of the season would be a record I would think for most scored.

Sox have scored 444 runs to date this season, last in the AL.

It depends on what motivates them. I strongly doubt that they're concerned with winning games; right now it's all about evaluating the youngsters. With JBJr approaching the record for consecutive hitless AB they might want to audition some of the others (e.g., Brown) for a secondary role next year. That becomes more difficult with Craig's return.
