Is Jerry Jones the new Al Davis?

    Great owner, terrible GM.

Seriously. To be honest, although he is a phenomenal owner, he is a less qualified football mind than Al Davis, and it isn't even close. Al went senile, but he had his times as a great lead personnel man. Really, it's a shame that most people's knowledge of Al Davis starts at some point between the Raiders getting blown out in the SB and the Tuck Rule game.

Al Davis was a football genius until his mind faded.

Jones has helped build the NFL brand and business but never had a football mind. He got lucky with the Hershall Walker trade and those picks were handed to a coach who knew all the college players (like Pete Carrol knew the best college players coming out).

One thing I didnt particularly like is that the guy just stuck with Jason Garrett. Not saying he is a terrible HC, but when they canned Wade Phillips he didn't even bother going out to look for a replacement coach.

He's made a couple of high draft picks on the Oline that have been intelligent moves. Good for him making the boring move over drafting the flashy player.

He is an all-time great owner, but he's also an all-time worst gm. According to him, he won three superbowls doing things his way, so there's no reason to change the way he does business.

He hasn't gotten as bad as AL yet, the romo contract was kinda iffy (soooo much guaranteed money and the guy is 34...) but he had to lock him up. He hasn't started giving ridiculous contracts out to project players or overspending on FA's, he's just not drafting all that well and needs to hand over the reins to someone who can evaluate talent better. He's not delusional enough to be in constant "win now" mode like AL was towards the end as evidenced by the lack of huge contracts (other than romo) and the 10 mill of cap space they have left.

Nailed it. FWIW, I think "that coach" had a large hand in making that trade happen too. Jerry trusted Jimmy Johnson with personnel and decision-making more than any other coach he's ever had, especially in the early years, in my opinion.

Garrett is a yes man for Jones. He won't bump heads with him like Parcells and Johnson did.

Jerry has even admitted that if he had a GM with his record he would have long since fired him.

Al had a great football mind while Jerry's got a great business mind. Both good owners but Jerry just needs to do what Robert Kraft does and sign the checks and say sounds good Bill whatever you want to do.
