Hey Chronz, Kareem Was NOT A "Stick-Boy"
Somewhere's in the very first PSD NBA GOAT discussion threads, Chronz called KAJ a Stick Boy (for supposedly being super-thin).
My first two thoughts were: Chronz (content way up on his High Horse) almost always gets NBA things right! (I only "look up to" 1 or 2 guys MORE than Chronz, in terms of their NBA-related posts); BUT, is this even true; and, even if it were, isn't this slander? (KAJ did NOT play like any Stick Boy; true, the "muscle" centers gave him the most problems; but he outranks ALL Centers; so those problems were NOT, by any means, the ONLY factor, i.e., they are only relative.).
But What Did I (or anybody else, for that matter) Know About This Subject??
So, I INVESTIGATED and here are the results (most of which surprised me; some of which astounded me (Walton, Pettit, McHale, McAdoo, Kevin Wilis, Moses, Russell, just for starters):
MY "MEASURING STICK": POUNDS PER INCH (take their listed weight and divide it by their listed height in inches - all numbers taken from: www.basketball-reference.com (except some NBL-er's, where I had to spend hours to track down every last number from dozens of sites).
MY COMPARATIVE "TALENT POOL":
For this analysis I did NOT choose all Centers or players in history; but ONLY THE BEST,
The 310 Players Who Ever Got An ALL-NBA(BAA)/ABA/NBL 1st-Team, 2nd-Team or (since 1989) 3rd-Team Selection. (In other words, they were THE Top 2(-3) At Their Position At Least One Season.)
Here's the First "Number", Out Of All 310 Players:
KAJ was 156th (EXACTLY THE MIDDLE GUY, out of the 310 players!) with 2.62 pounds/inch.
Here's the Second "Number", Out Of 99 Centers + Power Forwards:
KAJ was 22nd "thinnest", in other words, he was right around lighter than 3 out of 4 and heavier than 1 out of 4 - NOT EXACTLY A STICK-BOY.
Here's My Third "Number", Were There Any "Skinnier" Great Centers and/or Power Forwards?:
CHECK THIS LIST OUT:
These Guys Were More "STICK-BOYS" Than KAJ:
1. Bill Walton
2. Bob Pettit
3. Kevin McHale
4. Bob McAdoo
5. Ralph Samson
These Guys Were Almost-Exactly As "Skinny" * As KAJ:
1. Kevin Willis (Willis Reed appears a little further down (he was a little heavier))
2. Moses Malone
3. Bill Russell
4. Marvin Barnes (notorious "Bad News" enforcer)
5. Connie Hawkins
6. Neil Johnston
7. Detlef Schremp
8. Maurice Lucas (the "enforcer" for Bill Walton's TrailBlazers)
9. George Mikan
10. Tom Chambers
11. Billy Cunningham
12. Pau Gasol
13. Jermaine O'Neal
14. Robert Parish
15. David Robinson
16. Chris Bosh
17. Artis "A-Train" Gilmore (perhaps, after Wilt, the 2nd Strongest pro-b-ball player ever).
18. Joaquin Noah
19. Shawn Kemp
20. Spencer Haywood
21. Dave Cowens
22. Dikembe Mutombo
23. Patrick Ewing
24. Jerry Lucas
25. Dwight Howard (is just 11% pounds/inch heavier than KAJ).
Only 30% of the 99 Greatest Centers & Power Forwards were/are more than 10% heavier, pounds/inch, than KAJ (and SOME of them were (relatively) out-of-shape, or, a bit overweight).
* They range from Kevin Willis (NOT Willis Reed), Moses & Russell who had identical pounds/inch as KAJ; to Jerry Lucas who was ONLY about 10% heavier.
P.S. Hey High Horse,
I don't mean to single you out; heck, I had to grit my teeth to even mention your name here.
But the facts "IS" the facts. KAJ, was NOT a STICK-BOY, so, Take It Back, PLEASE. hehe
P.P.S. This reminds me of when I used to be an ABA fan, confused by the names:
Caldwell Jones and Joe Caldwell !
