    Kareem Was NOT A "Stick-Boy"

Hey Chronz, Kareem Was NOT A "Stick-Boy"

Somewhere's in the very first PSD NBA GOAT discussion threads, Chronz called KAJ a Stick Boy (for supposedly being super-thin).

My first two thoughts were: Chronz (content way up on his High Horse) almost always gets NBA things right! (I only "look up to" 1 or 2 guys MORE than Chronz, in terms of their NBA-related posts); BUT, is this even true; and, even if it were, isn't this slander? (KAJ did NOT play like any Stick Boy; true, the "muscle" centers gave him the most problems; but he outranks ALL Centers; so those problems were NOT, by any means, the ONLY factor, i.e., they are only relative.).

But What Did I (or anybody else, for that matter) Know About This Subject??

So, I INVESTIGATED and here are the results (most of which surprised me; some of which astounded me (Walton, Pettit, McHale, McAdoo, Kevin Wilis, Moses, Russell, just for starters):

MY "MEASURING STICK": POUNDS PER INCH (take their listed weight and divide it by their listed height in inches - all numbers taken from: www.basketball-reference.com (except some NBL-er's, where I had to spend hours to track down every last number from dozens of sites).

    MY COMPARATIVE "TALENT POOL":
For this analysis I did NOT choose all Centers or players in history; but ONLY THE BEST,
The 310 Players Who Ever Got An ALL-NBA(BAA)/ABA/NBL 1st-Team, 2nd-Team or (since 1989) 3rd-Team Selection. (In other words, they were THE Top 2(-3) At Their Position At Least One Season.)

Here's the First "Number", Out Of All 310 Players:
KAJ was 156th (EXACTLY THE MIDDLE GUY, out of the 310 players!) with 2.62 pounds/inch.

Here's the Second "Number", Out Of 99 Centers + Power Forwards:
KAJ was 22nd "thinnest", in other words, he was right around lighter than 3 out of 4 and heavier than 1 out of 4 - NOT EXACTLY A STICK-BOY.

Here's My Third "Number", Were There Any "Skinnier" Great Centers and/or Power Forwards?:

    CHECK THIS LIST OUT:
These Guys Were More "STICK-BOYS" Than KAJ:
    1. Bill Walton
    2. Bob Pettit
    3. Kevin McHale
    4. Bob McAdoo
    5. Ralph Samson

These Guys Were Almost-Exactly As "Skinny" * As KAJ:
    1. Kevin Willis (Willis Reed appears a little further down (he was a little heavier))
    2. Moses Malone
    3. Bill Russell
    4. Marvin Barnes (notorious "Bad News" enforcer)
    5. Connie Hawkins
    6. Neil Johnston
    7. Detlef Schremp
    8. Maurice Lucas (the "enforcer" for Bill Walton's TrailBlazers)
    9. George Mikan
    10. Tom Chambers
    11. Billy Cunningham
    12. Pau Gasol
    13. Jermaine O'Neal
    14. Robert Parish
    15. David Robinson
    16. Chris Bosh
    17. Artis "A-Train" Gilmore (perhaps, after Wilt, the 2nd Strongest pro-b-ball player ever).
    18. Joaquin Noah
    19. Shawn Kemp
    20. Spencer Haywood
    21. Dave Cowens
    22. Dikembe Mutombo
    23. Patrick Ewing
    24. Jerry Lucas
    N.B.
    25. Dwight Howard (is just 11% pounds/inch heavier than KAJ).
Only 30% of the 99 Greatest Centers & Power Forwards were/are more than 10% heavier, pounds/inch, than KAJ (and SOME of them were (relatively) out-of-shape, or, a bit overweight).

    * They range from Kevin Willis (NOT Willis Reed), Moses & Russell who had identical pounds/inch as KAJ; to Jerry Lucas who was ONLY about 10% heavier.

    P.S. Hey High Horse,
I don't mean to single you out; heck, I had to grit my teeth to even mention your name here.
But the facts "IS" the facts. KAJ, was NOT a STICK-BOY, so, Take It Back, PLEASE. hehe

P.P.S. This reminds me of when I used to be an ABA fan, confused by the names:
Caldwell Jones and Joe Caldwell !

You realize that 10% is a lot right? That's almost the difference between Michael Vick and Marshawn Lynch.

Also to put it in perspective KAJ weighed about the same as 6'5 James Harden does now. Yes he was great but to be fair he was a stick boy.

N.B. I've just spent the last couple of hours trying to get this chart to line up column-wise - it looks like I was highly unsuccessful. Unfortunately for YOU (hehe), for fortunately for me (yippee!), I'm not going to try again.
It looks near-perfectly lined up in this edit window!

wow what an effort. Unfortunately I think sometimes you just need to do an eye test ya know. Guy was thin.

    Hey mRc08,
    Thanx for the compliment.
Problem with the eye-test HERE is that it can be mighty deceiving.
I NEVER imagined that such as: Walton * was lighter than KAJ; or that others were exactly as light/heavy as he was.
Also, if you look at fotos of him, especially for the 2nd half of his career; he looks marbled from neck down to calves. (And he was superbly-conditioned!).

Part of (not all of to be sure) the reason he is perceived as so thin is because:
    1) he WAS so tall;
    2) He stretched every inch of his frame out with those Sky-Hooks (which was his majority shot);
    3) He had that great wing-span on top of that tall-frame.

    * I saw Walton play LIVE. Also a number of times on TV. And I met him in person. He was HUGE; and never appeared "Stick-Boyish". (I also met Wilt!)

Did I meet these two great and giant Centers because THEY had to meet me??? No; it was pure-coincidence - and besides, I absolutely FLUBBED BOTH ENCOUNTERS - First with Wilt, I was standing next to him at the San Diego Sports Arena (he was seated but just about as tall as me). And I couldn't do more than mumble. Some years later, having sworn to never do THAT again; I crossed paths (while I was in the middle of a 4-hour run) with Big Red (on a bike, which he dwarfed). And danged if I didn't clam up AGAIN! How humiliating! (So why am I telling the world???) I like to make (gentle) fun of myself (besides it's good for me).

I think those shorts may have contributed as well

To get an idea (which I thought I did, but not really...) look at my list of all 310 guys.
In last / heaviest place ...
310th HEAVIEST AND BY A TON (pun intended!) ... there's Shaq!

How the bleep did (relative Stick-Boy) Dennis Rodman EVER defend THAT (and about as good as anybody ever did!)

    Hey mRc08,
    LOL
Which reminds me, KAJ was a "Puny" interview - he was more than shy (for most of his career). That too contributes to the physical image. (And THAT cost him so much in terms of how sports writers/broadcasters "flailed" him afterwards (for not cooperating enough); and THAT cost him a lot in terms of GOAT-standing. Compare that with MJ the MONSTER-Interview!)

    Hey alexander_37,
Well I might have to take your word for it about NFL-ers. But 10% is NOT a lot.
And besides, I have never, ever heard such as these guys referred to as Stick-Boys and yet they were every bit as Thin as KAJ was (the first 4 being Thinner; the last three EXACTLY as "Stick-Boy-ish"):

    1. Bill Walton
    2. Bob Pettit
    3. Kevin McHale
    4. Bob McAdoo
    and
    4. Kevin Willis
    5. Moses Malone
    6. Bill Russell

P.S. I have provided a list of 310 "All-Star" players. Their average height must be around 6-6; and half of them are thinner than KAJ. So were 155 of them ALL "Stick-Boys"?

By the way, I've run heavy long-distance mileage for 36.5 years (2.5 hours a day minimum; 1,000 runs at the marathon distance or longer (26.21875 miles); with a maximum-length run of 7 hours thru high mountains for my 62nd birthday (minimum elevation: 10,000 feet). Elite marathons average (exactly) 2 pounds per inch (24 % less than these elite b-ballers; yet nobody ever calls them "Stick-Boys".
