    Sabermetric Question

Maybe we could have a "sticky thread" dedicated to questions about Sabermetrics.

1st Question: How does Johnny Peralta have a WAR more than twice as high as Starlin Castro when Castro beats him in almost every statistical category?

Maybe not beating him in all categories but close in almost everything.

The only major category Starlin has him beat in is BA.

Also, Peralta's defense has apparently been a lot better than Starlins. That's why his WAR is higher.

I did't know WAR included defense. I thought that was what DWar was for.

    Got it.

SO if you remove DWar are you left with OWar? and if that is the case...then Peralta is a 1.7 and Castro is a 1.3. Is Peralta having a better season offensively than Starlin? I dont see it.

~.10 points of wOBA (weighted on base average...basically, like OPS but it weights things a little more fairly, considering that OBP runs on a 1.000 scale and SLG on a 4.000 scale meaning that OPS has SLG bias in it).

1.7 to 1.3 is pretty close. My rule of thumb when comparing any WAR type deal is that if it's within .5 or so, it's pretty damn close, because WAR is susceptible to fluctuation and imperfection. It's always very important with WAR or any statistic, to remember there is no silver bullet.

Peralta's defense seems like a major anomaly. Probably just some SSS randomness.

Why just a thread when we've got an entire forum?
