What is your definition of an ace?

How do you define an ace? (Statistically and in words)

Who do you consider aces ?

    And Second tier pitchers ?

I'm just gonna call an ace a pitcher you can give the ball in an elimination playoff game and he throws 7 in with 2 ER or less over half the time. Gonna leave it to the experts here to define it statistically.

    Aces

    Madison Bumgarner
    Felix Hernandez
    Cliff Lee
    Justin Verlander
    Max Scherzer
    Clayton Kershaw
    Zack Greinke
    Chris Sale
    David Price
    Johnny Cueto
    Adam Wainwright
    Stephen Strasburg

2nd Tier (I list Fernandez, Darvish, and Tanaka in this level because they need to do it for at least 3 years IMO before moving up to the elite class)

    Jose Fernandez
    Yu Darvish
    Matt Cain
    Cole Hamels
    Gio Gonzalez
    Jordan Zimmerman
    Mat Latos
    James Shields
    Jon Lester
    Masahiro Tanaka
    Anibal Sanchez

How do your rankings go ?

What the literal definition of an ace is....

the best pitcher on a teams staff

So there are 30 aces in baseball, from Clayton Kershaw to Chase Anderson (of whomever you would claim as the best pitcher on the D'Backs)

A lot of people don't like this, but it's the literal definition. That means Curt Schilling wasn't an ace when he was with Randy Johnson in 01-02.

Matt Cain is not in the 2nd tier anymore, Julio Teheran should be there.

That definition seems to be outdated imo.

This. The first person who gets the ball on a staff. Good example on Schilling. Current ones could be Kershaw / Greinke. By definition, Greinke would be the ace on a lot of teams. But he's not because he takes the ball after Kershaw on the Dodgers. Basically the word ace means little.

It's an outdated definition, being the Rockies ace is the equivalent of a 15 year old bragging about being the best player on a sports team for 6th graders.

If they have to do it for 3+ years then Strasburg, Scherzer, Cueto, and possibly Bumgarner shouldn't be up there.

An ace is a teams best pitcher but obviously you're not looking for a literal definition. When I hear the word 'ace' three pitchers come to mind; Sale, Kershaw, and Felix.

Also, I would consider Darvish and Lester aces. Or top tier pitchers.

This is actually Bumgarner's 5th year so he does have a case although its borderline. I see that your definition of ace is more strict than mine, but I think you forgot to add Wainwright to your list.

According to whom? Where did you find this definition? And even if it is somewhere, the word ace, like thousands of words, have multiple definitions.

Other definitions for the word ace include:

    superb,excellent, first-rate, outstanding, a very skilled person and Top-notch

There's others too. So, if someone views an ace in base as only the best pitchers in baseball, they too are correct.
